    Default digital files

    hi

i would like to start a thread regarding digital files, how best to manage and archive and what are the best storage options for the thousands of files we accomulate throug the years.

    here are my first questions:

    1. whats the safest media you use to store files? (cds, dvds, extra hard disk or upload to an internet storage)

    2. how do you document or archive your photos? (by month/year, by project or by size/quality)

    3. what file size do you (professionals & amateurs) take your photos? (small, medium, large or raw)

    4. is there any way we can view cr2 as photo thumbnails in windows?

please comment so we learn from each other.

    thanks

hi tried that but it doesnt work with my copy of windows, he he. . . tried a couple of other softwares but the files only show within the software (zoombrowser, erfanview) - and they are slow. now i use rawshooter but the microsoft viewer had to be the best option if you want to view while you open your folders.

    another question:

i store all my photos in cd's with dvd masters. but i read in some forums that these has some problems. has any of you had any problems with cd/dvd storage? please tell your stories

    1) safest way is to have multipul backups. in my case i use DVD/CD plus redundant hard disks.
i use DVD for a project with pics more than 650mb and try to limit DVD capacity to less than 4GB.
i dont like to fully pack a DVD/CD as the edges are usally the 1st part of the disc that gets scratched or damged over time/use.

    2) by month/year then project and location (all three info should be present that way its easiest to search for them)

    3) as much as possible always use the highest setting.
Large SuperFine and in situations requiring higher detail and flexibility then RAW.

    4) why not convert all the RAW to JPG/TIFF then work from there?
