Local expo raises P3.8M

THE Exporter’s Expo 2009 organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Central Visayas generated total sales of over P3.8 million for exporters who participated in the four-day event last month.
This already includes cash earnings that amounted to P2.03 million and booked orders of P1.55 million. Transactions that are still under negotiation reached P235,390, according to a terminal report released by the DTI and furnished to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
DTI 7 Director Aster Caberte said the exhibit, which attracted 73 Cebu-based export manufacturers, was a success since it allowed exporters to dispose of their inventories after the United States recession softened the demand for Philippine-made products.
Earlier this year, the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF) reported that the industry suffered a 30 to 50 percent setback in volume of orders at the height of the global financial crisis.
The gifts, toys and houseware (GTH) sector, on the other hand, experienced a 30 percent decline in orders, said GTH past president Jenifer Cruz in a phone interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
As demand softened, exporters turned to the DTI to help them dispose of their inventories in the local market.
Cruz, who runs 33 Point 3 Export Inc., said the exhibit was a good opportunity for exporters to sell products to the local market, even at lower prices compared to commercial companies who sell similar products.
During the exhibit, the sold a “substantial” number of products, said Cruz.
Murillo, another export manufacturing company that joined the exhibit, generated a good number of customer inquiries...
