Kung ingon ani palang ang output sa certain "self-proclaimed Cebu's film community", i think people will really be intrigued and make some short films... Oh, I mean diay the Sinebuano... hahahaha... what a shame, and to use the name of CEBU in that case... Hmmm....

Actually, we don't really have to rely on the manila people if we want CEBU to be recognized as one of the "film capital"... Why won't we ask "Sinebuano" to make quality film starring our local talents, then join in the competitions outside the Phils....... and let foreign people recognize the local talent and our scenery here... I think..... then we can claim that Cebu is the "film capital"...

It's true that the Manila people are not crucial on the concept of Cebu's "film capital" but there's no denying that there are locals who are praying for the opportunities to appear in their films, even as extras...getting paid and exposed in theaters all over the country. The Manila productions (especially from GMA Films, Star Cinema and Regal Films) often have tens of millions of pesos in budgets. Would you believe that a friend of mine living in the downtown area dreams of appearing in a Star Cinema film on the same screen as her favorite stars until now? Oh yeah, the Shake, Rattle and Roll series of films is her favorite and she often dreams of having one of those films shot in Cebu.

The big question now is can anyone from "Sinebuano" come up with tens of millions of pesos (and a credible production team) to make a quality film? Going low budget all the time will produce very little opportunities for local talents.

Helping local entertainment requires setting aside pirated materials. Example: a local band releases an album that the local community (and consumers from other regions that have access to buy the album) can support by buying only the original.

I don't think Sinebuano can produce the tens of millions of pesos to make a quality film. And even if they have that kind of money, still, they can't make a quality film/movie... hehehehe.

admittedly, Sinebuano cannot come up with tens of millions of pesos to make a quality film anytime soon. Maybe even never. But quality film need not be worth tens of millions of pesos. But if you notice, even the stars of the studios are now getting into independent films which costs a lot less to produce. There are a lot of problems that hinder indie filmmakers to get screened in commercial theaters, let me name some:

1. Cinemas do not have DVD players and it costs an arm and a leg to have a digital video converted to film. Most indie filmmakers get seed money from grants or from their own pockets.

2. From what I know, films get booked to theaters through distributors. And it is them who decide which films are to be shown in the Philippines or not.

3. Education / Awareness. We are so used to commercial films that we tend to look over independent films which are made by Cebuanos unless they are helped by a major outfit like Cinema One or wins an international award.

but, groups like Sinebuano hold small film screenings and talks, once in a while to make people aware that Cebuano films are being made. So maybe, one day, Cebuano films will have regular screenings in commercial theaters.

Ruel Antipuesto and Jerrold Tarog's Confessional was a breakthrough in Cebuano cinema. They proved that it can be done. Hopefully, someone will finally get the big break.

That's too bad. Some local talented filmmakers have barely enough money for small productions like documentaries. Because a lot of people watch films to be entertained, they often look forward to the commercial releases (the films with tens of millions of pesos in budget, and the stars) and overlook the independent productions. Oh yes, distribution is another big issue.

From an economic standpoint, having a big budget film produced in Cebu can help the local economy and give Cebuanos the opportunities to work in film - be it as extras, production assistants, etc. Heck, they can update their resumes as well.

Not only do I know someone literally dying to appear in a film that will be shown nationwide in theaters, I also know someone who runs a catering business and hopes that a production team would hire them. The hotels will also benefit from the big budget shoots...and add to the tourism revenue of the province.

Do you remember the film Minsan Pa? That was filmed here in Cebu.

Of course, having a big budget does not ensure success. Look at Star Cinema's Pacquiao The Movie - big P50,000,000 budget, wide distribution and ABS-CBN's stars - it flopped big time in 2006! I heard its overall box-office gross was less than P5,000,000.

Productions and performers like this deserve support, be it financial, technical, etc.

Obviously Cebu's youth should not depend on entertainment for their livelihood. They should instead finish school and get office jobs.

Helping these local entertainers also means spoiling them.

Try to ask yourself kung kanang so-called local talents we have here are pure locals gyud. Kung pure cebuano/a ilang ganahan ipa artista kanang silang Goliath, Teban, etc.. dapat ayaw ng mga hulagway na klaro kaaung naay mga lahing foregner or unsa ba diha. Local Talents man kaha?!
