Yup, banks do issue "pre-approved" cards here, but for activation you need to send/fax them certain documents like Income Tax Statement, etc. Others you just have to call to activate. It really depends on the bank.
Used to be you need to be of good credit standing and have a a certain amount in the bank but with the present competitive atmosphere certain requirements are waived, and sometimes they even upgrade your credit limit if you meet certain criteria.
You don't have to be really rich. A steady income, good credit standing and they will qualify you. I received three pre-approved cards, two from the same bank, and one from a bank where I do not hold an account. Go figure. But then there are requirements that I have to submit prior to activation. So "pre-approved" sometimes is just a gimmick. You still have to go through the process. They just hope that holding the card in your hand will make you want to pass the requirements. Sometimes its not the banks but the agents, because I think some are on a commission basis per card approved. So some of them resort to underhanded means of obtaining approval.
The agents are so nice and accommodating to talk to when you're still applying for a card. But try skipping a couple of payments and see how accommodating the banks get. :P
Please be careful with how you handle your personal info, especially bills, bio data and application letters. Even what you post online. Don't leave papers lying around because in the wrong hands they can be used to your disadvantage. Stay safe everyone!
