19-year-old Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KOs) of the Philippines took the WBO junior bantamweight championship away from 37-year-old reigning titleholder Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-8-2, 32 KOs) of Puerto Rico via unanimous decision on Friday night at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario. Sonsona scored a knockdown in round four and went on to win by scores of 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109. Lopez was deducted two points in round eight for a low blow.

Former IBF junior featherweight champion Steve Molitor (30-1, 12 KOs) scored a fifth round KO over Dario Azuaga (75-16-2, 64 KOs) in a featherweight bout. Molitor dropped Azuaga in round four and Azuaga barely survived the round. “The Canadian Kid” launched a full out body assault to open the fifth round. Molitor scored back to back knockdowns to end it. The time was 1:50 of the fifth round.

A fight between Canadian heavyweight champion Greg “The Steel Pole” Kielsa (10-0, 5 KOs) and Kevin “Big Dog” Montiy (17-6-1, 13 KOs) ended in a no contest after an accidental head-butt in round two opened up a cut over Montiy’s left eye. Nietes edges Vargas
In a clash for the undisputed WBO mini flyweight championship, WBO champion Donnie Nietes, (24-1-3, 14 KOs) won a controversial twelve round split decision over interim champion Manuel Vargas (26-3-1, 11 KOs). Vargas pressured Nietes the entire fight and was ahead 116-112 on one card, however Nietes prevailed 118-110, 116-110 on the other two cards.
Super flyweight Z Gorres (29-2-2, 15 KOs) won by TKO when Cruz Carbajal (29-18-2, 16 KOs) couldn’t come out for round six due to a dislocated arm.
Calderon defeats Mayol again
Unbeaten WBO light flyweight champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon (33-0-1, 6 KOs) again retained his title against #1 Rodel “Kid Rapido” Mayol (25-4-1, 19 KOs) by technical decision on Saturday night at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As it was in their first meeting, the fight was stopped by a accidental head clash cutting Calderon’s forehead. The rounds were close, but Calderon’s technical skills prevailed 68-65, 68-65 on two cards, while Mayol was up 68-65 on the third card.
