Korea is astonishing the world with a vast number of great films they have released.

Try the New Wave of Filmmakers (Directors) from Korea who are churning out twisted, memorable and substantive works:

    Park Chan-Wook
    - easily the most famous because his movies enjoy the most commercial exposure worldwide. He made the vengeance trilogy (basically Psycho violence) composed of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy (which is getting a hollywood re-make), and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
    - JSA and his shorts (of Three... Extremes and Simpan) are also pretty good

    Kim Ki-duk
    - probably most famous for 3-Iron which won the FIPRESCI Film of the Year. His oeuvre is a fascinating collection of trivial characters. Some of his movies include Dream, Beautiful, Breath, Time, The Bow, and Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring

    Joon-ho Bong
    - another brilliant director who made Memories of Murder, The Host (which is getting a hollywood re-make), and his latest which premiered at Cannes and is getting glowing reviews -- Mother.

    Ji-woon Kim
    - perhaps most popular for his family psycho-horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters (which was remade this year as The Uninvited). He also did the amazing A Bittersweet Life.

    Chang dong Lee
    - awesome director who directed the Secret Sunshine, Oasis and Peppermint Candy, among others. Well worth checking out.

    Kwon Taek Im
    - dubbed the most famous Korean director you never heard of. Is probably the master of Korean cinema who has made over a hundred films. He won the Best Director award in Cannes for Chihwaseon.

Those are just some of the great movies from an amazing film industry. I wish ours was as equally stunning, varied, and most importantly, relevant and substantial. We need our modern era of Brocka, De Leon, O'Hara, and Bernal!
