    RROD abating?

Microsoft's hardware problems are well known. The company had to extend its warranty to three years on Xbox 360, and lost a billion dollars in the process. To this day, people still complain about the console's reliability and the so called "Red Ring of Death." A recent survey by magazine GameInformer found that 55 percent of respondents suffered through a 360 failure but Xbox Live and Xbox 360 director of product management Aaron Greenberg believes the hardware problems are now in the rear-view mirror at this point, since the company has continually made improvements on internal components.

Today, IndustryGamers received new survey data from SquareTrade, which claims to be the largest independent warranty provider in the world. The study compared the malfunction rates for all three consoles and found the Wii to be nine times more reliable than Xbox 360 and four times more reliable than PS3. That said, there has been significant improvement with Xbox 360 and the RROD problem. SquareTrade’s data shows that the introduction of the “Jasper” chipset in late 2008 "has likely solved" the RROD problem.

Other highlights of the study include:

•During the first two years of ownership, 2.7 percent of Wii owners reported a system failure to SquareTrade, compared with 10 percent of PlayStation 3 owners and 23.7 percent of Xbox 360 owners.
•Excluding RROD failures, which are covered by Microsoft’s three-year warranty, 11.7 percent of Xbox 360 owners reported a failure.
•While the RROD problem continued to be the major issue for Xbox 360s purchased through 2008, early indications point to theproblem abating in 2009.
•The most common types of problems seen with the PS3 and Xbox 360 were disc read errors and output issues. The Wii had more power and remote control issues than the other 2 systems.
SquareTrade based its findings on an analysis of failure rates for over 16,000 new game consoles covered by SquareTrade Care Plans.

Do NOT update Xbox 360, full homebrew exploit coming!

In rather huge news, we have received an email from the respected developers of the Free60 project who indicate that users should NOT update their 360's with the Summer update. Despite the update being dangerous as it overwrites the first stage bootloader, it will also block out a homebrew hack that the team are planning to release. So DON'T UPDATE!!!

Here is the email we received:

Dangerous Xbox 360 Update Killing Homebrew

On Tuesday, Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 software update that overwrites the first stage bootloader of the system. Although there
have been numerous software updates for Microsoft's gaming console in the past, this is the first one to overwrite the vital boot block. Any failure while updating this will break the Xbox 360 beyond repair.

Statistics from other systems have shown that about one in a thousand bootloader updates goes wrong, and unless Microsoft has a novel
solution to this problem, this puts tens of thousands of Xboxes at risk.

It seems that this update is being done to fix a vulnerability already known to the Free60 Project. This vulnerability has been successfully exploited to run arbitrary code, and a complete end user compatible hack has been in development for some time and is planned to be released on free60.org shortly. It will allow users to take back control of their Xboxes and run arbitrary code like homebrew applications or Linux right after turning on the console and without the need of a modchip, finally opening up the Xbox 360 to a level of hacking as the original Xbox.
