the i5 is a the mainstream counterpart sa i7. the i7 will become the high-end, i5 will become mainstream and the core 2s will eventually become the entry levels and will be known as i3(s) if i'm not mistaken. they do not have the same socket, i7 is LGA1366 (land grid array) while i5 is LGA1156. the i5 has smaller pin count because it loses QPI and uses DMA to connect the processor to the rest of the components.
