In many ways we don't since much religion is merely man's ideas about God or gods and so unnecessary. Much religion (in Christianity at least) is totally unnecessary in terms of what God Himself regards as essential., and in terms of benefit to those who practice it.

Real religion involves knowing the true and living God who 'does not dwell in temples made with hands' and so is unknowable from the perspective of any religious practice we can create ourselves. Thankfully God has appeared in history and spoken and dealt with people and told us about Himself, so we can both know about Him and know Him if we want to since He has given His light to every man.

So, to put it simply, we don't need religion, we need reality.

Yeah, I think the same way. This is one of the reasons why I cannot separate my religion and my spirituality, because I think the two help each other out. Religion, or in this case Christianity since I'm speaking as a Christian, gives us moral codes or laws, like the ten commandments in the Old Testament or the two greatest commandments in the New Testament, in order to help us grow in our spiritual life. In this context, we are not called to become religious at the expense of our spiritual growth, nor are we called to become spiritual at the expense of the religious tradition that we follow; rather, in this sense, we are called to practice our religion so that we can grow in our spiritual life. I think the two are not mutually exclusive.

Agree ko ani. I saw people professing to be Religious , muslims and christians, because they hold the laws of their religion above their love for their children would punish their kids for violating a holy precept, like, for listening to a secular music or talking to a certain person with a different religious background would get a cold shoulder from mom or dad for a month or more as punishment for the violation.

Those people you saw may be those who call themselves as such but honestly don't know the whole point and core of their faith which is LOVE. aww. religion man diay ni ang gi-hisgutan. haha.

We need religion but not to the point where we replace faith with man-made rules and schemes. What I have always believed in (and what my religion has always pointed out) is Religion will not save anyone or assure someone of a lifetime which is problem-free. I go to church every Sunday because I want to worship God with fellow believers. Klase2x pud ning mga tawhana ang naa sa amo simbahan. Going to church and fellowship with them reminds me that despite each of our shortcomings in this life, we are still hopeful of a future life with God.
