While spas are generally reserved for those who can afford it, one family in Antique decided to bring pampering to the masses, but with a fishy twist. At the Calawag family's "Fish Spa" in Tibiao municipality, customers can have a unique foot pampering experience for only P1 per minute. The small spa, built right at the Calawag family's backyard, features a long and shallow pool of water teeming with small fish, where customers can wade and soak their feet. Instead of being scared off, the small fish tend to gather around customers' feet, giving a tickly but relaxing sensation akin to a foot massage. This reportedly has therapeutic benefits and cleanses impurities from the feet.
The spa's owner Flord Calawag, who holds a Master's degree in Fisheries from the University of the Philippines Visayas, said he uses a variety of fish endemic to Panay Island reefs and ones that are friendly to humans. He refused to say, however, whether the fish were trained to hover around humans or if this is their natural behavior. The "Fish Spa" is cheap but enjoyable, which is why many locals, both young and old, are often seen flocking to the establishment. Since the spa is conveniently located along bus routes to Boracay Island, municipal officials hope that the place will draw more customers, especially foreigners, and help boost tourism in the area.
