religion thus is just the coming together of like-minded people who share the view of the nature and character of what is considered by them to be divine - whether object or persons or spirits, etc.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of my faith. If God did became man in Jesus and if Jesus did rise from the dead and institute a Church to serve as his body here on earth, then yes, we need religion in order to get to know more about God, love him, serve him, and worship him.
The nature of man is to put the attribution to someone/something else whenever there are questions he cannot answer. For example, the age old question of "where did we all come from?" compels us to point the answers to "someone higher" than us who may have a hand to our existence. Thus it has become already a "default" that on matters the mind cannot fathom, we entrust it to a higher intellect we know or associate as "God" although there is not much proof if God or a god really exists - then follows the concept of faith polished by philosophers and sages that people begin to organize themselves to identify them as faithfuls of such faith (religion).
^i think we have a penchant to label/give identity to things/to be identified with something. that's why we made religions. maybe, if we accept things as is, no past nor future, there wouldn't be religious concepts like heaven or hell, karma or reincarnation, punishment or reward.
imo, religion is a path of least resistance. ready made beliefs. all you have to do is believe, practice and follow the rules. no need to dig deep within yourself. if you don't believe in the bs but don't want to rock the boat, you just have to be quiet and keep with the appearances. but i think religions were primarily made to give us moral codes to live by with the intention of making us better human beings.
i think i'll pass.
like sa kanang mga remote na kaau nga places, they don't have a religion but they have their own concept about God and the one who created the heaven and earth, they believe that there is someone up there balancing everything in nature...
