Number 2 Question for today (8/22/09): Good for 20 points!
How do you value Cultural Diversity?
Cultural diversity is the variety of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole. (The term is also sometimes used to refer to multiculturalism within an organization. This article does not currently cover that alternative meaning.) There is a general consensus among mainstream anthropologists that humans first emerged in Africa about two million years ago. Since then they have spread throughout the world, successfully adapting to widely differing conditions and to periodic cataclysmic changes in local and global climate. The many separate societies that emerged around the globe differed markedly from each other, and many of these differences persist to this day.
As well as the more obvious cultural differences that exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, there are also significant variations in the way societies organize themselves, in their shared conception of morality, and in the ways they interact with their environment. It is debatable whether these differences are merely incidental artefacts arising from patterns of human migration or whether they represent an evolutionary trait that is key to our success as a species.
By analogy with biodiversity, which is thought to be essential to the long-term survival of life on earth, it can be argued that cultural diversity may be vital for the long-term survival of humanity; and that the conservation of indigenous cultures may be as important to humankind as the conservation of species and ecosystems is to life in general. The General Conference of UNESCO took this position in 2001, asserting in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity that "...cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature"
This position is rejected by some people, however, on several grounds. Firstly, like most evolutionary accounts of human nature, the importance of cultural diversity for survival may be an un-testable hypothesis, which can neither be proved nor disproved. Secondly, it can be argued that it is unethical deliberately to conserve "less developed" societies, because this will deny people within those societies the benefits of technological and medical advances enjoyed by those of us in the "developed" world.

REACTION:
For me, we value cultural diversity by accepting each other differences and it helps us to understand these differences. In one way or another, we could learn to appreciate each other’s norms and cultures. Just like the Muslims who are celebrating the Ramadan month, mu respect ta nila sir na lahi ang ilang way sa pagpray sa ilang god in a way na ila pud na gi respect ang atong way sa pag pray.
Embracing religion and science for a better development and progress in the society. There is much chaos happening in the world now a days ,but with the aid of science and religion .It guides people to find a better reason and a happier way of living.Prioritizing values embrace religion ,seeking for a better knowledge rely on science. In this diverse world we tend to question our existence ,either we rely on religion or science.Instead of arguing and questioning their concepts why don't we explore the world and appreciate it's beauty .Especially here in the Philippines where we have many beautiful and historical spots .Why don't we go and appreciate the beauty of nature at it"s best.Be happy and embrace love in the world.
How do you value Cultural Diversity?
In my own opinion, to value cultural diversity is to simply 1. LEARN/UNDERSTAND, 2. RECOGNIZE, 3.ACCEPT and RESPECT, each people from different cultures..
1. UNDERSTANDING- means that we(I) should fully be aware, knowledgeable upon other cultures. We(I) should not put our mind in a single basin, rather we must learn and then UNDERSTAND that "MY/OUR CULTURE is different from THEIRS"..
2.RECOGNIZING-means that after we(I) understand, we(I) must identify and RECOGNIZE each differences, specifications of our culture to that of others. In America, when an adolescent reaches 18yrs old, she/he is free from the premises of his/her parents. He/She has the liberty to live independently. But in the Philippines, they(we or 18yrs old adolescents) are still in their parents roof and in this culture, most of the Filipinos(parents) don't allow their children to be away from them.
3. ACCEPTANCE- After recognizing, we(I) must not go and judge other culture's traditions and norms. Although, there is this thing we call "culture shock", after going to another place and finding out that people in China(Chinese) eat turtles for lunch, frogs and etc., we(I) must learn not to impulsively react to their "eating habits". We(I) should accept not just our culture, but other cultures as well and ACCEPT their uniqueness.
4.RESPECT- from accepting comes RESPECT. Most chinese people worship their God "buddha" kneeling down, practicing meditation, etc. Some people(especially small and narrow mined ones) will laugh about this. Now, this attitude is wrong. We(I) must learn to be openminded and free our hearts with evilness. We must learn to appreciate and RESPECT cultural diversity because of the fact that we live in just one world. People in different culture are human like us, and deserve the right for equality and liberty. Respecting not just one's own cultural practices but others as well will promote PEACE, order and BALANCE in this world we are living.

REACTION:
I value cultural differences by accepting our cultural differences and by appreciating it. Through this cultural diversities, we and our culture are identified. Our culture is the source for a great deal of self-definition, expression, and sense of group belonging.Through this cultural differences, we could learn a lot from it which we could use to help improve and give value to our own culture.
Pra nko ra, or sa akng opinion, I kinda agree sir.. Genes do affect behavior BUT this alone will not explain why people are not really strong or smart enough. Because although ang atong genes mka-affect jud, dli rman sad genes ra ang mka influence na2 as we grow up. Pwede sad ang environment that we lived in. Pero, mudepende rman sad na sa tao if ever she/will try to reach his/her potentials, dpende sa skills and attitude sa tao nga iya g-place at hand or g-practice and g-mold. For example, it may be nga intelligent jud ka, because it runs in the family, pero if dli pud ni xa i-enhance nga ability/imung intelligence kay mudeteriorate, labaw na if tapulan. Ang humanistic Psychology sd pra nko is linked with "thinking positive" or in a way, being optimistic.. Pra nko ra ni, sir..hehe![]()

Edrea Danielle Roma MWF (1:30-2;30)
sir i already seen the video so i have 15 points already..hehehe
my reaction/comment is that they said many things about how we evolved from humans but they recently saw a new discovery that is very different from others. it means that they need to search more deeper about our ancestors. through time , there are many changes like our physical appearance and our size of the brain. humans have 3x bigger than the apes. it is very clear that we are the most superior living thing that exist.
they scientists said that earth was called "the planets of the apes" way back 8million years ago because it is dominated by apes with different sizes and they live in the land and in trees.apes also know how to use the stick and stone for hunting. so i could say that we came from the apes but we are more developed in terms of thinking, physical, and reasoning skills and etc.
sir please read para naa ko points..thakns!![]()
Sir's question:
For my next question:
Is there such thing as good and bad genes that could influence man's behavior? Why and why not?
Answer or Reaction:
Our genes play a significant role in our behavior. During the year 1869,the first empirical work in human behavioral genetics, entitled Hereditary Genius by Francis Galton. Here, Galton intended to demonstrate that a "a man's natural abilities are derived by inheritance, under exactly the same limitations as are form and physical features of the whole organic world".
I believe that there is no such thing as bad or good genes. All behavior is the joint product of heredity and environment, but differences in behavior can be apportioned between hereditary and environment. The Canadian psychologist Donald Hebb has likened the nature-nurture controversy to an argument about whether the area of a rectangle depends more importantly on its width or length. For any given rectangle the area is always a joint product of the two dimensions. However, when comparing two rectangles having different areas, it is meaningful to ask to what extent the different areas can be attributed to differences in either of the dimensions. Substituting, we can see that any behavior is always the joint product of heredity and environment, but differences in behavior can be apportioned between differences in heredity and in environment. Having said that, it is extremely difficult to go from genes to behavior, or more generally to bridge the chasm between genotype and phenotype.
One note of caution when thinking about genes and behavior: a gene does not produce a behavior. It produces copies of itself (messenger RNA) and from that, proteins. Many of these do contribute to behavioral variation, as we shall see in the following examples. But often these proteins just change tendencies to respond a certain way to a particular environment. There is no real way to separate Nature (genes) vs. Nurture (environment); instead, we should look closely at how variations in each of these interact to produce a behavior.(Sapolsky 1997).This makes the study of behavior difficult at times, because the interaction between genes (hormones, expression, neurons, etc) and environment is so
complex.
