He believes this line is in tune with a growing sense of nationalism in the Philippines.

Philippine Islands ( P.I.) was the name that the Americans gave the country when it was a colony. When the Republic of the Philippins won their independence the name was changed to Republic of the Philippines or The Philippines. The name and the flag are items of great respect here. That is why P.I. is considered rude.

To be rude doesn't require intention, but ignorance certainly helps.

Our proud nation has a name, that people fought and died for, to reduce it to a "geographic location" does a disservice to the Republic of the Philippines

Or maybe it is a joke and really means "Puta'ng ina".
i don't think jay aldeguer, a respected cebuano-based businessman is dumb and all the more ignorant with this. i suggest we should not be all the time politically-inclined. its just branding a product IMO. in politics its obvious its not acceptable to use P.I. but let's just loosen up a lil bit and be apolitical coz in a way the country is geographically-speaking, a group of islands. anyway its just a product.

I hear some balikbayans call their home country "PI". And in Micronesia (Palau), they like to refer to our country as "PI".

TS has a point about it being political incorrect, but then again I can't ascribe any malice to the balikbayan, the Palauan or perhaps even to Jay Aldeguer. In Jay's case he was simply emphasizing the tourism potential of our country. The DOT's official tourism campaign sells the Philippines as a collection of 7,100 islands and 7,100 different experiences or something to that effect. They wouldn't get anywhere telling prospective tourists to come to the "Republic of the Philippines".

I would, however, bristle at the thought of a head of state or even a foreign diplomat referring to our country as "The Philippine Islands."

Reminds me of a recent Obama speech where, for the very first time in 30 years an American president correctly (both in the political and formal sense) referred to Iran as the "Islamic Republic of Iran."

Yup I agree, it is politically incorrect, it is objectionable if used in the political arena, mostly if used as international description for our country. But still personal impressions and business gimics I think is free to create their own it is not official just a fruit of their concepts.
