since after the WWII, the Vatican was criticized for officially not condemning the Nazis, or they simply turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the Nazis.

i think it was Pope John Paul II who issued a public apology to the surviving members of the Holocaust and to the world.

Pope John Paul II or Karol Wojtyla was a Polish soldier fighting against the Nazis during the invasion. and Pope Benedict XVI or Joseph RATzinger was a young Nazi officer during WWII. maybe he did his share of atrocities back during the war, or did nothing. or, he helped the Jews and Christians. his past is vague enough.

Wasn't Pope Benedict a member of Hitler's Youth? I think that's different from being a military officer. I'm not sure how old he was at that time, or if he had a choice not to be part of the organization.
