Capitol to operate parking lot in IT park
WHILE in the midst of a legal battle over the pay parking scheme inside the Capitol premises, the Cebu Provincial Government plans to use its idle lot in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City by converting it into a pay parking area.
Capitol information and revenue generation consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda confirmed the Capitol will soon earn income from the vacant lot it owns in front of the Asiatown IT Park.
“We intend to operate it (pay parking) for 24 hours, that’s why we formalized it through a resolution,” Sepulveda told Sun.Star Cebu.
He referred to the resolution the Provincial Economic Enterprise Council (EEC) passed during their Jan. 30 meeting, to convert the idle lots and prescribe parking rates.
Resolution
The Cebu Provincial Board passed a resolution adopting the EEC’s motion and approving the pay parking rates, saying it found the scheme “reasonable.”
After the Provincial Government implemented its pay parking scheme inside the Capitol compound in November last year, the Cebu Lawyers for Unity and Brotherhood (Club) and lawyer Elias Espinoza filed an injunction case.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia earlier explained the EEC can “set, fix or adjust prices, rates and fees for professional services and rentals of human and physical resources in an economic enterprise.”
The Provincial Government had previously operated a pay parking scheme at the IT Park but decided to stop it, said Sepulveda. At that time, it was a losing proposition.
“We can now apply the lessons we have learned,” said Sepulveda. The Province came up with the pay parking arrangement to answer a clamor from vehicle owners for “safe, adequate and convenient” spaces, he said.
The newest income-generating project of the Provincial Capitol is expected to officially start next week.
Sepulveda said the landscaping and other improvements on facilities in the new pay parking area were already done.
The Province will charge P20 for cars for the first two hours and P10 for each succeeding hour. Buses and motorcycles will
be charged P40 and P10, respectively. (GMD
