    FK, i don't think you're totally right... Yes, i admit. I was really curious why a lot of kids my age wanted to join so i went into a personal mission of somehow understanding the why's and the how's...

    I went through the 70+ paddles and even the hours of "service". Although i was never really able to go through the final rite, i know i satisfied my curiousity.

    Unlike most of us, some people just cant make a name out of themselves. They cant be appreciated for who they really are or how they want to be understood. In fraternities, minus the wars, there is a brotherhood no ordinary barkada can provide.

    Everytime we had a meeting, especially the provincial ones, the overwhelming number of members would make you feel good that each and everyone of those who were present was a brother, a sister. I could never forget the fun we had on fiestas, when we'd hop from one house to another, tasting different ways of cooking chopsuey, kaldereta, lechon... We also raised certain amounts to provide simple lighting on dark alleys that the government may have overlooked, sponsored big events and went on partying if we had time. Believe it or not, we also had mini tutorials to help our bro or sis who needed a little help.

    But no, it wasnt only on good days that we cherished each other's company. I remembered, when a fellow was sick, we were there, visiting him, trying to raise funds to aide his hospitalization. Also, when a sis got pregnant, without a hubby, we were all there, letting her know that everything was going to be fine. And we were sure it was going to be. We couldnt be of any much of financial help but i tell you, if i was in her place, the presence of good friends would make my burden a bit lighter.

    Perhaps you'd think that these things only happen with the "good kind" of fraternities. Of course not. Because the one i got the privilege to get into is one of the now notorious groups.

    Actually, it's all in the chapter/area leaders. Sometimes they dont choose the right kind of members or perhaps they feel like going through barbaric thingies. But beleive me when i say it's not all chaos. It's not all fighting.

    Some things just don't seem the way you think they are.

    @crinkle:

    As what i have said not all... but mostly pasikat lang ila.
    I know that when fraternities are established they are not for fighting... they are there to help the community... but what happen now is stupidity. Many of the frat members don't know what's the purpose of there fraternity. I know it's not plain brotherhood, i know it has a deeper meaning.

    But the way i see how this fraternities test there new applicants, through hazing... i cannot understand why it's called brotherhood... i think they are not looking for brothers, they are looking for barbarians. I just don't like the idea that you have given yourself to be paddled by another man, who you even do not know. When in fact, your parents cried when they spank you when you commit mistakes.

    Would you agree that an examination is better than hazing?

    i agree examination is better than hazing. fraternities should screen their members well, education and psychological background. or criminal record?
