CEBU, Philippines - A team from the Cebu Institute of Technology has bagged the top prize of the recently-concluded Sun Microsystem’s Open Jive Challenge ’09 held at the Technological Institute of the Philippines in Quezon City last July 18, 2009.

The team is composed of Joshua Verano, Jomark Aldave and Israel Sato, all from the CIT College of Computer Studies. Their coach is Larmie Feliscuzo, chairman of the CIT IT department.

The team bested 11 other finalists from different schools across the country. The Sun Microsystem’s Open Jive Challenge is considered as the most prestigious open-source technologies competition in Asia.

CIT’s entry entitled “Generic Spellchecker: An Open Office Extension” got the judges’ vote because of its practicability and simplicity.

Other participating teams include those from Manila Central University, Silliman University, Technological Institute of the Philippines- Manila, University of Immaculate Concepcion, University of the Philippines- Diliman and University of San Jose-Recoletos.

The CIT team will represent the Philippines at the Asian Grand Finals in Singapore on July 27 to 29.

The Open Jive Challenge, organized by Sun Microsystems together with Elixir Technology and Philippine Society of I.T. Educators, is one of the Asia’s most prestigious competitions in open source software development.

The winner at the regional grand championship in Singapore will be awarded US$3000, four Macbook Pro laptops, and a free trip to the next Sun Developer event. This year marks the Philippines’ and Indonesia’s entry to the competition, joining Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore who have participated in the competition for several years.

The objective of the Open Jive Challenge is to use Open Source technologies such as Java™ technology, Open Solaris™, NetBeans™ IDE, MySQL™ and many others to develop Web 2.0 solutions, which consequently hopes to address global key issues while fostering interaction between communities on the Internet.

The CIT College of Computer Studies is one of the only 9 institutions in the Philippines awarded by the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence in IT Education.
