@vemp: Don't forget Al Rio. His women are beautiful also. His scans are the only ones I printed out for future reference. I do find Serpieri's hatching
technique awesome though. He establishes form using hatching instead of smudging. Maayo dyud kaayo.

@all: diemjudilla's friend Wilbert Wee will join us. He will be bringing his sketchbook. I hope we can schedule a drawing session a few weeks from today
focusing on nature drawing (trees, grass, shrubs, leaves, flowers, vines, roots, etc.). There's something about nature that appeals to me. It makes you
think you know of the bigger picture.

Let's just discuss when and where (dili di-ay Kukuk's Nest, but kato tapad, Turtles' Nest standby UP fine arts students). See you all this afternoon If it
rains just bring an umbrella. No rain will stop me from going.

Woot! I actually looked decent in that pic!

I enjoyed the afternoon. Wish I could get to see more talent and works. Although I have a feeling I was the youngest and most inexperienced one in the crew. Heh. There's always room for improvement.

Can't wait for the next meeting. Hopefully, there will be drawing sessions.

Thanks for giving me something to look forward to.

@zerk: Why are you covering your face? Unfair!

    @dichromaticbeagle: No you're not. I am.

@all: I'm still writing the minutes of the meeting in Notepad.

Default Minutes of the meeting (Feb 26, 2006)

Note to attendees: If I made a mistake, correct please.

--- Minutes of the Meeting ---

    Date/Time: February 26, 2006 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM
VenueÂ* Â* : Bo's Coffee Shop (Cebu Doctors Hospital branch)

    Attendees:

    1. zerk
    2. cmontoya
    3. dichromaticbeagle
    4. vemp
    5. Wilbert Wee (soon to be an Istoryan)

    Topics discussed

    1. Preferred style

Â* Â*Explanation:Â* Who are the artists we want to emulate?Â* Which publisher (e.g. Marvel) do we want to usually refer to for examples?

    Â* Â*a. zerk - Marvel
Â* Â*b. cmontoya - Al Rio, Frank Cho, Serpieri
Â* Â*c. dichromaticbeagle - Manga, Fusion, still looking for personal style
    Â* Â*d. vemp - Marvel, Frank Cho
Â* Â*e. Wilbert Wee - Tim Burton, Jill Thomson, Dave McKean

    2. Sketchpad / art samples

Â* Â*We showed our sketchpads to establish current skill levels.

Â* Â*a. zerk - Showed his mmm... scratchpad .. containing scribbles of male and female figures
Â* Â*b. cmontoya - Showed his rendering of leaves and flowers and the books he is learning drawing from
Â* Â*c. dichromaticbeagle - Showed her manga including kawaii (she drew her own Istoryan avatar)
Â* Â*d. vemp - Showed his muscular heroes and his first attempts at drawing women
Â* Â*e. Wilbert - Showed his Sandman characters

    3. Self improvement

Â* Â*a. zerk - Draws as often as possible (when he's not watching cable TV or working)
    Â* Â*b. cmontoya - Draws 30-60 minutes a day
Â* Â*c. dichromaticbeagle - Draws as much as possible (even during class)
Â* Â* Â* - Tried sketching faces and found out she's not limited to Manga
Â* Â*d. vemp - Draws at night, midnight to early morning (no disturbance)
Â* Â*e. Wilbert - Draws during meetings, in the morning while listening to Celtic music

    4. Aspirations

    Â* Â*a. zerk - Draw comics as a hobby
Â* Â*b. cmontoya - Same but who knows
Â* Â*c. dichromaticbeagle - Wanted to take fine arts but just like me was dissuaded
Â* Â*d. vemp - Same sad story but this guy's good (sayang dili klaro iya inked drawing)
Â* Â*e. WilbertÂ*- Same sad story; Wants a career in arts but right now wants to be involved in sequential art; wants to illustrate children's book
Â* Â* Â* (Note: Please take a look at Pilantod, Botbot and Jack in children's section in NBS).

Â* Â*But as agreed, it's never too late.Â* We come from different backgrounds (zerk - architect, cmontoya - QA supervisor,
Â* Â*dichromaticbeagle - nursing student, vemp - IE student, Wilbert, chemist?) and ages (kami ni zerk pinakamatanda) but we're still at it.

    5. Frequency of meetings

Â* Â*- Not decided but probably every two weeks

    6. Venue

    Â* Â*- Not Bo's (too confined)

    Â* Â*- Suggestions:

    Â* Â* Â*a) Coffee Beanery (right spelling?)

    Â* Â* Â*b) Turtle's Nest

    Pending

    1) We actually don't know what to do during the next meeting

    Â* Â*Suggestion

Â* Â*a) Drawing session - Wilbert volunteered to teach drawing plants comic book style
Â* Â* Â* - zerk and dichromatic scribbled and each has a unique approach, maybe they can also
    Â* Â* Â* Â* share their own approaches.Â* Let's just bring reference photos (from corbis.com?)

    2) How big do we want to be?

Â* Â*- Start small as big is probably unmanageable

    Others

    1. We discussed other things like what manga, anime, comic books, superhero movies we like. Everybody was excited and had multiple conversations going on.Â* I could just imagine the
noise if we had more people attending
    Â* Â* Â*
    2. We exchanged cellphone numbers and our real names (but won't post them here).

    3. Wilbert, by the way, along with diemjudilla submitted their work to the Neil Gaiman contest.Â* Let's wish them luck!

    --- end of minutes ---

Default Re: Comic book drawing club here in Cebu?

@all: I will wait for Wilbert's confirmation regarding nature drawing but in the meantime it would be nice if other experienced comic book artists can share how to draw the following comic book style:

    a) tree trunks
    b) leaf masses (using pencil not charcoal) including grass, shrubs, flowers, etc.
    c) rocks (small and large, i.e., boulders)
    d) mountain ranges
    e) clouds
    f) sunsets and sunrises
    g) wind
    h) water reflection
    i) water

Let us know if you're interested to teach these for free I think we only need 2 to 3 masters before we can finalize coaching/drawing session. Would
4 hours be enough to draw the above?
