Its not only measured in DDR5 or DDR3 for both brands in terms of performance. There are other factors like Bandwidth or how many bits (256bit for ati 512bit for nvidia). number of ROPs and Shader clock are known to be advantageous for Nvidia compared to ATIs.
ATI have not yet unlocked their shader clocks, the number of ROPs and memory bits which are significantly lower compared to Nvidia.
Technically ATI has more advanced technology since they can cram upto 800SPs in a single 55nm Die. They just need to unlcock some features in their cards.
Even without unlocking these features like shader clocks, memory bits, and # ROPS ATI could still compete with Nvidia.
