SCOUTING REPORT
Positives: de Colo is almost perfect as a combo guard -- he has the ability to create his own shot, but shows good ball-handling skills and passing ability to execute the pick-and-roll...He plays with good court vision and basketball IQ, and is not hesitant to use his body to set up screens...Very creative with the ball in his hands and shows good elevation and ability to stop on a dime, fade back and put up a swift pull-up jumper and enough leg drive to attack the rim...Well-built for his position and can play either guard spot...Lacks great court speed, but compensates with a good wingspan (6 feet, 6 inches), standing reach (8-3) and leaping ability (37-inch vertical jump)...Natural passer and can flip the ball behind his back to an open teammate or elevate for a jumper but never stops looking for open teammates cutting toward the basket...Has terrific quickness with the ball in his hands and can look Globetrotter-esque weaving through traffic...Moves the ball behind his back, switches hands and can score over bigger defender in the paint...His perimeter range is NBA-caliber and he shows good footwork...Sets his feet properly to execute shots from the perimeter from a standstill position...On pick-and-rolls and drive-and-dish plays, he shows uncanny court vision and is conscious of keeping teammates involved...Might lack blazing court speed, but his balance, body control and court savvy are assets...Constantly fools defenders and keeps them off-balance with excellent hesitation moves and has the pump fakes to get his man to leave his feet early, giving de Colo the space needed to get his shot off...His balance is evident in his ability to slash to the basket and his size creates mismatches to give him nice scoring opportunities on the perimeter vs. point guards, as he gets good elevation and a high release to shoot the ball well over the opponent's reach...Has a fluid stride with good fade-away moves to get space for his jumper, but is equally effective scoring coming off the dribble, showing no hesitation taking on contact when working inside the arc...His balance and footwork are evident in the way he moves on screens, taking on contact well working inside.
Negatives: Despite the excitement he can generate and dedication he shows on offense and as a facilitator, he is not really an efficient defender...Lacks the quick initial step to recover, and tends to get too passive taking on more physical wings and is late to react when his man gains separation...Creates mismatches vs. point guards when shooting from the perimeter, but isn't quick enough to defend vs. NBA point guards and is physically overmatched by some wing players and "2" guards...His lack of explosiveness will limit his minutes at the point, even though he is most comfortable playing that spot...Might need some sort of guarantee from a team looking to draft him in the second round considering his buyout clause is seven figures...Has enough lateral quickness to stay in front of slower shooters, but not enough to face up to quicker ones...Better stepping back for a jumper or taking shots off the dribble, lacking the great explosion in his initial step to separate on the bounce.
Compares To: BENO UDRIH, Sacramento -- A fantastic slashing guard with the savvy to create his own shot, de Colo plays with a true point guard mentality, always looking to keep his teammates involved. He is a disruptive force in the passing lanes and shows good hops and determination going for rebounds. His behind-the-back and no-look passes made him a crowd favorite, but he doesn't have the speed to cover NBA point guards and lacks the natural strength to match up to wing players. He is better served as a combo guard coming off the bench, at least until his body and overall game matures.
