VATICAN CITY (AFP) — Pope Benedict XVI yesterday prayed for the victims of a massive landslide in Southern Leyte, saying that "our hearts turn to all those suffering".
"In a special way our hearts turn to all those suffering the devastating consequences of the landslide in the Philippines," he said during the Sunday Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square.
"I ask you to join me in praying for the victimes, their loved ones and all those affected," he added. "May the grieving families experience the consolation of the Lord’s presence and rescue workers be assured of our concern and support."
Rescuers Sunday picked through a sea of mud in search of survivors two days after the massive landslide buried 1,400 Philippine villagers, but officials conceded hope was all but lost.

let us offer a solemn prayer to the victims....
to the families... relatives... don't lose faith... be strong & hopefully they can move on.

its really so sad...
MAN against Nature....
lets just pray for all souls to rest in peace and for their families and relatives to continue life... and may this hearbreaking tragedy serve as lessons to all of us..
in this particular tragedy, i agree that nobody is to be blamed
but a lesson has to be learned...
OVER a decade ago, American researchers who made an independent study of Southern Leyte already advised residents to evacuate the place because the province’s land mass is hollow underneath and could collapse.
Leigh Lerio, whose family and relatives live in Guinsaugon and neighboring Barangay Atuyan, told Sun.Star Cebu that warnings about the fault line in Leyte were raised as early as the 1990s.
She was in Manila when tragedy struck. She lost four relatives, including a first cousin who was swept away and buried alive by mud while tilling his farm.
The wife of another cousin and two children were among those feared dead after mud and boulders covered the school in Guinsaugon.
Lerio said that despite the warning, people stayed because their source of livelihood is the land and their future is unsure elsewhere.
She said the warning did not see much publicity and local government units also did not take it seriously.
If they did, she added, contingency measures could have been adopted a long time ago and residents warned of the risks they were in.
“There are no guidelines on what to do when disaster strikes,” she said.
..the hard and painful way.
