Yeah, nindot bitaw gyud ang netbook para travel. I am using an MSI Wind right now.
Problem with netbooks is it lacks an optical drive and the processor and specs makes it hard to do other tasks like photoshop etc.
Netbooks are good as secondary laptops.

I dont think so. Compaq are good laptops even better than Dell XPS.. I have a compaq laptop in cebu which I gave away. I would recommend this:HP has announced Compaq Presario V6218TU notebook , which is powered by 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5200 and features 8X double layer (8.5 GB) DVD writer, a large 15.4-inch WXGA display, integrated 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN, integrated Bluetooth and 5-in-one media card slot. You can get this for 560$.. or 25,000 pesos. You can change the wallpaper to an Apple icon.. so it would look like a Macbook.. it's aluminum casing too..

If it's mobility that you are after, then a 12.1" LCD is really ideal. I currently use an IBM/Lenovo X60s with a 12.1" screen and I find it perfect for my needs (ACad, Office, Photos and Powerpoint presentations). The X60s has no built-in optical drive, only an external one, but I find this configuration better since their is no sensitive optical sensor to worry about, thus contributing more to the unit's mobility factor.

The X60s has been discontinued, I got mine early 2008. but Lenovo has new models with similar specs. Go for an 8cell battery. It will give you a 6 hour usage. Don't get Vista. Just opt for XP Pro and wait for Windows 7.

I also have an HP MiniNote. It has a great screen and keyboard and looks good but is an underperformer compared to EEE1000H/HE. It only has an 80G HD and a battery with a 2 hour life. The battery really sucks because one would expect to use a Notebook in a coffee shop to last for 3-4 hours. I use the HP Mini for office editing when I am travelling on overnighters or when I need to wait for the kids in a mall. I bring my X60s along for serious work.

I use my desktop for the more serious tasks. I consider my laptops to complement my computer tasks and not as my primary working tool.

You have a lot of choices with your Php40,000.00 budget. I suggest you take a look at the tried and trusted brands first - Dell and Lenovo. There are models available at the Php30,000.00 bracket. Many have told me that Asus and HP are better for indoor work. When I told them that I need to use my laptop outdoors and within a construction site, I was advised to get a Dell or a Lenovo because these are more resistant against dust. So far, I haven't had any problems. BTW, my previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 4100 PIII model and it never gave me a problem and was very sturdy. It is still being used now by my daughter as a desktop.

The others who commented are right. Bottom line is - how will you use it and where will you use it. A big factor of my choice for the X60s was that it had a HD protector software bundled with the ThinkPad package. Ask around about this software. It's a great tool if you usually put your laptop on standby mode and lug it around. Ask about battery life. A true "mobile" laptop should last for at least 4 hours. If you work outdoors then test the unit against and behind glare. The Lenovo non-glossy screen is perfect for outdoor work under extreme glare but the downside is the limited viewing angle. It's a compromise I have learned to live with. For indoor use, the glossy screen would be fine.

Other factors to consider are elementary. A 160 HD should be minimum. Upgrade it to at least 4G RAM. And if you have any money left, invest it in a high capacity external HD for backing up files. 3 USB ports is minimum as well as firewire ports.

Of course, invest in a good water resistant laptop bag and consider a well padded sleeve for additional protection.

a very good and sensible advice i must admit. so, first think about where you're going to use it then study the features. you can't have all the great feature in one package so think of the features you will need the most and what you can live without.

We have limited choices for 12.1" laptops. It's either the 10.1" netbooks with limited processor speed or the 14.1" laptops. However, the 14.1" laptops already have optical drives, faster processors and bigger HDs and RAMs. You still have plenty of options if you choose a 14.1" that falls within your budget. Many 14.1"ers are thin and light. But you really need to go with someone who is knowlegable with the performance and reliability of the brand.

the 12.1"'ers are commonly called business laptops because it is the most common size ordered by corporations. the usual configuration of business laptops is more for office and business applications rather than for video or gaming. business laptops are also built more solidly but as a compromise, most models don't have built-in optical drives but comes equipped with external optical drives. the basic concept of a business laptop is for it to be light, long battery life, excellent outdoor performance, sturdy and without unnecessary bells and whistles.

again, it goes back to how you intend to use it. if you are a gaming freak, then the 12.1" screen size is too small. if it is also used as you main computer then you should get one with a built-in optical drive and a bigger screen size. if you plan ti use it outdoors a lot, then test the screen against glare and make sure you have at least a 5-6 hour battery life. a 4-cell battery with less than 3 hours battery life will be useless for mobile users.

i recently sold my abovementioned HP mininote, and plan to get an Asus 1000HE. but i intend to use it only for office documents and Acad, making it a sensible choice for my needs. the extended life battery is also great, compared with the measly 2 hr limit of the HP.

if I were to buy another 12.1" notebook, I'd make it a choice between Lenovo and Dell based on my past experience with both. Asus would be my third option if I am going to use it indoors.
