Six Days in Fallujah - "Bringing the Iraq War Home"

Genre: Third-person shooter, Survival Horror, Tactical shooter

The World War II shooter has been played out for years. I've spent more time in sci-fi wars with strangely aggressive alien and/or robotic foes than I care to share publicly. What we very rarely see in the videogame world is a shooter that tackles the real stories of today. When a group of US Marines returned from the bloody battle for Fallujah in Iraq, they aimed to change that. Their stories, with the help of development studio Atomic Games, will be brought to life with the upcoming Six Days in Fallujah.

The Battle of Fallujah took place in November of 2004 and was one of the bloodiest battles in the Iraq War. The aim of this game is not political. Don't expect there to be any message of who was in the right or wrong. The aim is simply to tell the true stories of the men and women that lived through the fight. A group of 42 marines offered up diaries, recollections, photos and videos to ensure the game you play is as close to the real thing as possible.

The gameplay we saw in the brief presentation looked like your standard third-person cover-shooter with a few extra bells and whistles. The screen flashes red when you start taking damage and, as is the popular trend these days, your health will auto-recover if you stay out of trouble for a short while. The added fun comes with the destructible environment.

Six Days in Fallujah is being built with a custom engine designed to be capable of showing off the sheer destruction that took place as war ravaged the cityscape. Buildings, walls, and just about everything else can and will be destroyed throughout the course of the game. No piece of cover is guaranteed to last forever. One section of the demo even showed the player using plastic explosives to blow up a section of a wall to create a new path to flank the enemy. At this point in development, the visuals looked a bit rough compared to some other shooters out there, but there's always time to clean things up before it hits store shelves.

To really make the reality of the situation hit home, Six Days in Fallujah intersperses documentary style video interviews with people who experienced the battle first-hand.

Though the graphics can't compare with some of the highest rated shooters of recent years, we'll have to wait until we get our hands on Six Days in Fallujah before passing judgment. How it controls and, perhaps more importantly, how the missions are laid out will be key to the success of this project. It's refreshing to see a game tackling current issues -- it could even be seen as a maturation of videogames as a whole -- but it also means this project will get closer scrutiny than most. Let's hope the gameplay does the concept justice.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

They say it's one of the most realistic video war games ever made. Its developer, Atomic Games, even hired ex-US Marines as their consultants to make the game more accurate on actual events.

But many are against the release of this game, mostly katong mga families sa soldiers who died in Iraq. KONAMI has also pulled out of publishing the game after the public outcry. So karon nangita gihapon ni sila ug publisher.

Kamo? what's your take? Is the game really being insensitive to those who fought & died in the war of Fallujah?

    payr!
