Globe Telecom set to launch own ‘fiber-to-the-home’ service


GLOBE TELECOM, Inc. will launch its own "hyper-speed" Internet service called Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) in Makati’s Forbes Park village on June 15.
GPON will use "fiber-to-the-home" technology with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (mbps), which would be the fastest Internet connection available in the country.
"With this speed, users can run multiple sites or applications simultaneously and can share the connection with other heavy users and still have good connection quality," Menchi T. Orlina, head of Globe Telecom’s consumer marketing group, told reporters.
The new service is "ideal" for various Internet applications such as High-Definition TV and Internet Protocol TV, she said.
The service will cost P14,995 per month. An entry-level plan, however, will cost only P3,995 per month and will come with a landline as well as a Wi-Fi router, but with a speed of only 10 mbps. It will allow a user to share the Internet connection with others at home.
By July, the new service will also be available in Bel-Air and Urdaneta villages in Makati and Serendra in Taguig. Other posh subdivisions will follow in the coming weeks. Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. and SkyBroadband, a unit of the Lopez-owned SkyCable, are also rolling out their fiber-to-the-home services, which use optic cables, instead of the regular telephone lines, to carry higher bandwidth.

PLDT earmarks P27 billion for expansion

MANILA—Telecommunication giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is spending a total of P27 billion in expansion investments, including its plan to roll out “Fiber-To-The-Home” technology in the middle of this year, and its ultimate goal in providing broadband for all.
