PAGC, crime watchdog team up to fight graft

The Presidential Antigraft Commission and the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption on Thursday will join hands in going after 10 high-ranking government officials said to be involved in irregularities, one of them of Cabinet rank.
Antigraft commission Chief Constancia de Guzman said the PAGC and the VACC signed a memorandum of agreement on Thursday to strengthen the government’s drive against corruption.
De Guzman said the PAGC’s tie-up with the crime watchdog reflects the administration’s efforts to weed out corruption in the bureaucracy.
She said the VACC will provide the commission with manpower in pursuing charges against crooks in government.
De Guzman did not disclose the names of the officials the antigraft commission will go after.
She said the trust given by the commission to the VACC points up the confidence entrusted by President Arroyo to the VACC, which has been instrumental in the plunder charges filed against Bureau of Internal Revenue collector Dominga Manalili as well as the plunder case against former President Joseph Estrada.
Dante Jimenez, founding chairman of the VACC, said the information submitted by his group to the PAGC was gathered from the suspect officials’ close associates, neighbors and officemates as well as their statement of assets and liabilities.
De Guzman said the team-up of the PAGC and the VACC should serve as a warning to the crooks in the administration to shape up because their days are numbered.
In 2005 the antigraft commission solved 162 cases with punitive recommendations at the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice.
Jimenez and de Guzman called on the media and the public to join them in their campaign against corruption in government.
Also at the signing of the agreement in Malacañang were VACC President Lauro Vizconde, television host Cory Quirino, Barangay Captain Martin Dino and anticrime crusader members Aida Versoza and Dr. Paz Mojica.
