Default Vigilante = Police - Daan pa ko!

    Big financier behind Cebu vigilantes

CEBU CITY -- A church official Thursday said he is willing to divulge information to law enforcement authorities on a person who funded “vigilantes” in Cebu in recent years.

Msgr. Achilles Dakay, media liaison officer of the Cebu Archdiocese, said that the person, a businessman, claimed to have paid police officers to kill criminals.

Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador said his office will coordinate with Msgr. Dakay about his revelation.

If Dakay is not comfortable issuing his statements to the city’s police force, Comendador said, the monsignor may approach the National Bureau of Investigation or the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

Between December 2004 and March 2008, more than 180 men—nearly all of them suspected criminals or newly released prisoners—were shot and killed in Cebu City by motorcycle-riding gunmen.

The Commission on Human Rights has expressed its worries over vigilante-style attacks in the cities of Davao and Cebu, but in both cases those responsible remain unidentified.

Dakay said that the businessman confided to him that he paid vigilantes, from the ranks of the police, to kill criminals in order to “cleanse” Cebu of crime.

While he refused to divulge the businessman’s name and his whereabouts, Dakay told reporters he was willing to tell law enforcement officials what he knew.

This is not the first time Dakay has informed media regarding his knowledge of the identity of vigilantes in Cebu.

In a report made back in 2006, Msgr. Dakay was quoted as saying the so-called vigilantes came from the ranks of policemen and were “trained and paid” to kill criminals.

Then Cebu City Police Director Melvin Gayotin had asked the monsignor to cooperate in their investigation on the vigilante-style killings, but the latter said he didn’t want to be involved.

In the report, Dakay said that some policemen were coddling these vigilantes. (JKV/With JTG/Sun.Star Cebu)
