Can't someone just say "Look up the Drake Equation" and move on to more sensible topics? Parehas ra ni sa time travel thread...same story... garbage in, garbage out. *shakes head*

you could always stop posting at this particular thread, mr.rodsky.
A true practictioner of science will always be a skeptic and will always actively debunk and test assertations made primarily through wild and careless speculation.
As a student of Martin Gardner, Carl Sagan and the Amazing Randi, I will constantly be on the alert for mindless pursuits that tend to corrupt the minds of those who seek logical and reasonable explanation, rather than seeking sensationalism and thrills.

You don't get it. Does a janitor ask why the kids are throwing their candy wrapper on the floor? The janitor just does his job, regardless if the kids notice him or not, or if the kids are asking "help" from him to clean up the floor or not.
I'm the janitor, and my boss is Carl Sagan.

so sir Rodsky, is there life out there? would yo be kind enough to enlighten us, para di mi ma abot dre "mindless pursuits that tend to corrupt the minds of those who seek logical and reasonable explanation, rather than seeking sensationalism and thrills."
i'm sure Carl Sagan would say to his favorite janitor to be gentle with the kids and not REPRIMAND them. if the way for the Cosmos to know itself is through US, then it surely does not mean it should only come from you, now is it? exchange ideas with people, mr.rodsky. you're so uptight sometimes. loosen up a little and listen to what the person has to say. if it does sound absurd, then gently tell him you don't agree with what he said. you may also tell people what you think and in return ask them what they think of your idea. even Carl Sagan would interact with non-scientists, wouldn't he?
The Drake Equation tells us, via probability/statistics that there may be intelligent life, similar/equal to or inferior or superior than ours. This doesn't necessarily mean that since the Drake Equation can be correct, that it's automatically true that all the UFO sightings and all the alien abduction stories are right. Applying the "christmas tree lights" analogy, there is a chance that, as one civilization "lights" up, it's probable that other civilizations are "dark" or "turned off", and thus the reason why we can't come in contact with them. Once our own civilizations ends (i.e. nuclear holocaust, asteroid impact, etc.), perhaps another one "lights up" in its place.
@Hellblazer, I don't see anyone else complaining about the manner by which I respond to the posts (except probably for bluedes). Perhaps some people are merely more sensitive than others when it regards to acceptance of criticism, and that's how I shall see the situation.
