"Hell exists, not as a place but as a state, a way of being of the person who suffers the pain of the deprivation of God" - Pope John Paul II

For me Hell as a state can be experienced in this world but it is only temporary and there is no such thing as hell forever!

Yes its not cus its a STATE of LIFE, its not a place. Cus a place is somthing that is tangeble, that means can be seen and can be touch. CAN you see hell? can you touch HELL? NO we cant touch it, same as heaven and purgatory, same as LOVE, HATE, HAPPINESS, ANGER all of these are STATE of life

How come Pope John Paul II said before he died that HELL does not exist as a place because before according to the Catechism of the Church, HELL is a place where souls separated from GOD are tormented for eternity!

So, dili diay absolute? kay na change man ang stance sa church when it comes to Hell as a place!
i agree with st.anthony nga it's more like gi-clarify lang ni JPII ang ato'ng pagsabot sa hell, wala siya'y gi-usab. sa CCC naa'y reference didto sa hell as "the abode of the dead." so daghan terms pwede magamit, pwede "abode," pwede "place," pero ang pinaka-exact siguro nga definition kay usa siya ka "state" of eternal separation kay God, nga mao ang term nga gamit ni JPII.

pero siguro ang figures of speech naa ma'y literal nga meaning.

sa hell, siguro dili siya usa ka lugar nga naa'y literal nga "lake of fire," pero literal gihapon ang misery and torment.

If that is the case, then it cannot exist after death but only in this world!

oo life can become "hellish" sometimes pero wala nagpasabot nga wala pu'y hell in the afterlife.

SEE now you have the popes exact statements, YES there is a HELL forever. Cus we have the 1st judgement which is directly after death then the final judgement when Christ returns to judge the living and dead

How can there be hell in after life when in fact the soul is created in the image and likeness of GOD? The ESSENCE of the soul is ONE with GOD and therefore cannot be destroyed!
