    Default Server Setup

    Guys i know there are lots of good ideas you have here.Just wanna ask regarding my server 2003.Mag setup unta ko 1 server then maximum 10 computers ang mo access ani na server not using cabling.Ang ila man gud gusto wireless sila to access the server.Ang server 2003 na computer naa na router for internet so wala problema ang lain na computer kay wifi man ila mga laptops.Unsaon nako pag setup aron ang other computer laptops maka access sa file sa server.Do i need to put IP address and DNS or just obtain the setting?

    Thanks daan mga tol.

    If the 10 computers would connect via wireless then you need an Access Point (AP) for them. Mas mayo unta if your DSL router naa built in na Wireless AP.

    You can have three options.

    First:
    DSL Router -> Server ->AP - - - - Wireless Laptops
    Your server needs two LAN cards. One for the DSL and another for AP

    Second:

    DSL w/ Wireless -> Server
    |
    - - - - wireless Laptops
    If your DSL router has built in Wireless AP, it would cater those wireless Laptops

    Third:
    DSL Router ->Switch ->Server
    |
    -------> wired Computers
    -------> AP - - - wireless Laptops
    This has room for future expansion.

    can you ping your server? If so, then its just a matter of sharing folders. Are you setting up a domain?

    configure your DSL router to act as the DHCP server. Once done, your DSL will be the one to provide the IP addresses to the wireless laptops.

    I suggest you set a static IP sa imong 2003 server. If yuou just want to set up a workgroup then configure all laptops and the server to belong to the same workgroup.

    If you are planning to set up a domain however, then you should configure your 2003 server to act as the domain controller.

    So, domain or workgroup?

    No probs. Just update this topic if you still have some clarifications or pm a mod or site keeper to close this topic once everything is already settled.

    Oh and by the way, i missed one of your queries on the use of domain. In layman's term, domain controller is something that controls who can access what and who can access where.

    In short, file access in the server can better be controlled in a domain than in a workgroup.
