Is it okay to go hungry to save for a pair of flip flops?

The point is - People do skip meals just to save enough money to get their wants. They may be starving in the process or they may not, but that's not the point. If you skip meals for a number days (a whole week perhaps) just to buy a pair of high-end flip flops, there is something wrong in that picture.
For some, apparently yes. Will that make them a lesser individual? I dont think so. Is skipping meals okay? For me it is and I am in no position to tell if one who do the same is wrong. For a pair of flip flops? Why not? Have I done the same? Yes, not for a pair of flipflops, but whats the difference?

I guess we just have different perspectives.. and priorities.

Does it make them less of a person? I don't know.. but I do know that they need to check their priorities. It's just a pair of flip flops, you know. And if a person skip breakfast and/or lunches just to acquire these unnecessary wants - that's just wrong. Actually, It should go the other way around - avoid buying unnecessary stuff to give yourself 3 meals a day.

It's all about common sense, really. Why would one go beyond his means to get something he wants and not something he needs. This is the exact attitude diri sa States on why PINOYS are filing bankruptcy and foreclosures tungod sa ilang pagka impractical. They go over the top their wants like cars, TV's, houses, etc... They try to cut it close with how much they can really afford. Then pag abot sa recession, na wagtangan ug trabaho ang uban.. karon nagkagidlay na ang agi.

Now, I am not saying that such scenario is gonna happen diha - but why risk it when you can totally avoid it from happening? All I'm really trying to say is that if you can barely afford it, ayawg pugsa - If you really need a pair of slippers, just compromise and get the cheaper stuff kay sinilas ra intawn na imong gi sakripisyohan. Sa ako-a man gud, kanang mga wants angay rana ug daghang sobra sa imong budget. Dili nga mo palit kag mga butang nga di kinahanglan unya walay sulod imong savings. Unsa kaha ug naay emergency? - asa man ka mo ku-ot nga imo namang gipalit ug Havaianas imong kwarta? Suchs situation may be a bit extreme pero it is very true in some cases.

That is what I have been saying. We have different priorities. Different perception and different perspective. Just be thankful that you are what you think you should be and you are stable as to your definition of stable.

And there are things that are important to us but not to yours, same as there are things that are important to you and not to us. This goes beyond tsinelas, but since it is the topic here, let me tell you this.

    Tsinelas for me,

    1. Is what I wear going to the office everyday, ( I keep my heels at the office para comportable ko magcommute)

    2. Is what I used when I do my groceries, my malling.

    3. I basically wear it more than any footwear.

So I dont think it is just tsinelas. And it is more a basic need than any other.

    ________

2nd point, on emergency and savings, I do not know with you, but for me savings comes first before everything else. Kaya nga before when there are something that I really feel like buying, I slash on meals, aside from taking both breakfast and lunch I settle maybe for a brunch. Or instead of going out for a burger, Il prepare nalang something at home then baonon naku. You know why a meal is always a target of so many pinoys to cut if they would like to save up something? Its because we spend more in food than any other culture that I know. We enjoyed eating, more on pleasure than being a fuel. And ofcourse, everything else is fixed. LIke my families budget for rent, for utilities, for school, for savings, for grocery. Basically what is left for me to slash is my daily allowance, although I do not have to skip a meal now to buy a pair or two.

I can personally afford to buy havaianas everyweek if I want to. But I can feel the sentiment of those "impractical pinoys" you were referring to, and to those implied as with less common sense. I am not saying that they are right, I just dont feel that I have the right to judge them. Practicality is very subjective. It depends on ones priorities. And you do not have to understand and agree to atleast respect one's priorities.

Again... a simple SPARTAN or ISLANDER would serve the same purpose... but of course you're gonna argue with the comfort and durability aspect of a higher-end pair of flip flops offers... regardless of the extra $$.

Look - obviously you can afford to buy these supposedly high-end slippers. Cool. But how about those who can barely afford it yet still try to cut corners just to acquire a pair? Don't you think it's wrong?

OT: I don't know about you but the bills usually comes first for me.. then I set aside the rest for savings.

And no - Filipinos do not spend more on food than any other culture.

Look... you're being defensive here. I didn't need to know about how you bugdet your earnings. If you're saying that you can easily afford a pair of Havaianas. Then cool.

I'm just saying how it is. I think it's messed up why they have to skip meals just to acquire these things. Seriously, is it a priority for people who can barely afford it? Wouldn't it be more practical if they just go buy a pair of cheap Spartans?

It's just not flip flops you know. They make sacrifices just to acquire unnecessary things like High-End Cellphones (even when they don't need the extra features these hi-tech things offer) , Laptops, Digital SLR's ,etc....

AGAIN - before mag tuyok tuyok atung storya, let me repost a paragraph I wrote a while ago:

Now - if one has money to spare for these types of things - It's okay. I may not get why they chose such things but it still is okay. I've seen wealthy people buy the most ridiculous things but they got money to burn anyways, so it's fine. Pero if someone has to constantly skip lunch for one straight week just to get a pair of flip flops.. there's something wrong right there.

Fire Starter .. scroll up bai. Kana imong argument, na discuss nana.

If you're too lazy to scroll up.. here's my rebuttal:

Okay ra man ug naay ikapalit. Ang naka pait ug wala.

Mo palit ug Hi-Def Flat Panel LCD TV pero can di sab makabayad ug HD Cable service.

    That's not practical anymore.

If you can afford these things without putting yourself and your household's budget in a mess, of course - go ahead.
