currently windows xp has extended support until 2014 and windows vista until 2012...if you really can't decide between the two i suggest you go with Windows 7 RC...
its free right now and and some reviews say its lighter than vista. it has nice GUI.if you like the product then you can buy it. i think windows 7 will be on stores by December this year. Because its free you don't have to spend some cash right away just 'coz some guys (like me) tell you this OS is better than the other..
one more thing, Windows 7 RC expires on June 2010. By Feb or March this OS starts to reboot automatically 2 hours after startup so you have 8 months to try out this build.
