PCGG to auction Imelda’s jewels worth P15B

MANILA, Philippines—The Presidential Commission on Good Government wants to auction off “as soon as possible” a huge cache of jewelry seized from Imelda Marcos, the widow of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, worth an estimated P15 billion, a PCGG official said Thursday.

PCGG Commissioner Ricardo Abcede said the jewelry, which are deposited in a vault at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, should be sold because the government needed the money.

“My staff is studying whether we can have an electronic auction. I am really determined to do this because the government is cash-strapped,” Abcede told a press briefing.

“If we can sell real estate, stocks, radio stations, why not this jewelry? I want them sold as soon as possible. No ifs and buts,” he said.

“I consider these non-performing assets. That’s why we are considering an electronic auction so that we can fetch the highest price,” he said.

The PCGG has customarily referred to the Imelda jewelry as consisting of three collections, because they were seized at different times after the first People Power Revolution that brought down Marcos in 1986.

These are the Malacañang collection, which consists of jewelry recovered from the Palace after the Marcos family and their associates fled the country in 1986; the Honolulu collection, so-called because they were confiscated by United States customs authorities from the fleeing Marcoses when they landed in Hawaii; and the so-called Roumeliotes collection, after Demetriou Roumeliotes, a Greek friend of Imelda, who was caught by customs officials in 1986 trying to smuggle out of the country 60 pieces of jewelry suspected of belonging to Imelda.

i can't get a good grasp of what u r saying...u mean kurakoton ang halin sa 15B worth of jewels? is there anything wrong w/ a public auction by the Central Bank for non-performing assets? AFAIK, anything mahalin sa public auction goes to the national treasury...

as for me, maayo wala gani nawala ug nahipos ra sa vault, or worse, perhaps na return ni Imelda...

Exactly my point! Ang halin padong na sa National Treasury...............and d chances are -it can be corrupted by those in power!
