Pinoys battle Thais on May 28

    Friday, May 22, 2009

THREE up-and-coming Filipino pugilists—Ramie Laput, Marvin Sonsona and Jason Egera—will try to prove their worth as they will be tested against experienced Thai fighters on May 28 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Laput, who is on a 21-fight winning streak, will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental super bantamweight title against former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin.

“Vorapin is a dangerous opponent for Laput. This will be a gauge of what he’s made of,” International matchmaker Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.

Laput has 36 wins and three losses with 18 knockouts, while the 32-year-oldVorapin has a record of 73 victories and 11 losses with 49 stoppages.

The unbeaten Sonsona (12-0, 11 KOs) will be vying for the vacant WBO Oriental flyweight crown against one-time interim World Boxing Council light flyweight titleholder Wandee Singwancha (57-10-1, 12 KOs).

“Sonsona has fought a considerable amount of fights. I think he’s ready for a big fight like this,” said Gello-ani.

Sonsona is fresh from a third-round technical knockout win over Louie Bantigue last May 8, while the 29-year-old

Singwancha lost his last fight against Daiki Kameda via a sixth round stoppage last March.

Egera, who suffered a devastating third-round knockout from Jundy Maraon, will try to redeem himself as he faces former world title challenger Pramuansak Posuwan in an eight-round war.

“This will be a good opportunity for Egera to jump up in the rankings and regain the glory that he lost to Jundy Maraon if he defeats Posuwan,” said Gello-ani.

If memory serves me right, I remember reading some rumors nga apiki gyud si Mayol adtong awaya, kay way saktong kaon.. noodles ra kuno.
Now that he's training at the wild card, and is under MP promotions, I'm pretty sure he has ll bases covered and hopefully he will be at his best when he fights Calderon who's one slick cat..

    Gesta Remains undefeated

A sold out 900+ crowd witnessed the first ever Rogue Boxing Promotions fight card last night at the Woodstock Terrace of the beautiful Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego, Calif.

While the San Diego Padres whacked balls against the San Francisco Giants a mere two blocks away, plenty of hits were had as part of the five bout fight card in the open air venue.

In the featured bout, San Diego's by way of Cebu City, Philippines lightweight Mercito Gesta stopped Tijuana's 2008 Fighter of the Year Alain "Konan" Hernandez with a quick burst of punches in what many ringside considered an early stoppage.

As soon as announcer David Diamante bellowed “It’s fight time!”, the action began with Gesta circling the ring for a couple of seconds and then catching Hernandez with quick southpaw jabs that "Konan" never saw coming. Gesta noticed and as he trapped the tough Hernandez against the ropes, he unleashed a barrage of punches that prompted referee Pat Russell to hug Hernandez and waive off the fight at the :44 mark of the first round. Hernandez protested furiously but he could not convince Russell otherwise.

"He was out on his feet," Russell stated immediately after the bout.

"I was surprised that it ended so early, I was ready for a tougher fight," Gesta said joyously after the bout. "I didn't even get hit!"

With the win, Gesta stays undefeated with a record of 15-0-1, 6KO while Hernandez loses for the first time in eighteen months and goes to 14-7-2, 7KO.
