They suffered consequences of human-laws, they are a proof of free-will because they will not end-up in prison cells if they were dictated all the time by a kind God.
They still have free will, it was never stripped off from them. They are just confined by human laws.

Because of self interpretation when they've read the bible and what they've heard from their leaders they concluded that GOD allowed us to do everything.
