Debates should be meant TO EDUCATE not show-off one's debating skills or to be used as a venue to propagate certain political or religious dogma.

If I may suggest:

For References:

1) Use the same Bible version (NIV would be a good choice for audience appreciation) and an Interlinear Bible would be dandy in case there are issues of translation.
2) Agree on standard references --> Encyclopedia and Scientific/Medical Journals and other credible or widely accepted scientific sources.

Treatment of References:

Standard references should be taken as FACTS. Remember, apologists or debaters do not or may have insufficient understanding/appreciation of scientific or historical evidence to begin with.

Other references maybe presented if and when the author is an expert on the field/subject being discussed and known to be of independent persuasion.
