Hotel, direct flights to boost Cebu tourism
By MALOU MOZO, MARS MOSQUEDA JR.
    April 7, 2009, 7:51pm

CEBU CITY — The opening of an international hotel and plans of a Middle East airline to fly direct to this city are expected to boost the tourism sector here.

An international hotel chain is targeting commercial operations in the city by the middle of this year with refurbishing works now 80 percent complete.

Radisson Hotel Cebu general manager Grant J. Gaskin said that the hotel will start its operations after the refurbishing and refitting works of the former Sheraton hotel structure are finished.

Meanwhile, industry sources said Kuwait Airlines is studying a plan to operate three weekly flights from Kuwait to Cebu.

National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS) chairman emeritus and former Kuwait Airlines district sales manager Robert Lim Joseph said he was informed that Kuwait Airlines is considering a three-times-a-week direct flight to Cebu.

“The direct flights would mean a significant increase in the number of tourists from the Middle East to Cebu,” said Joseph.

Kuwait Airlines is targeting the large number of Kuwaitis now working or studying in Cebu.

Around 2,400 Kuwaiti students are now enrolled in the University of the Visayas (UV) in Cebu City.

The influx of rich Middle Eastern students in Cebu has been making up for the slowdown in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Department of Tourism Undersecretary Phineas Alburo said that the unexpected influx of Middle Eastern tourists, specifically students from Kuwait, is bringing positive business to Cebu’s tourism stakeholders, as they fill in hotels at this time of slowdown.

Alburo said that these Middle Eastern students are taking up distance learning programs at UV, and they have come in batches and started arriving in Cebu since last month and are under 21 days tourist VISA.

Alburo said that their office is working closely with the university and the Immigration Bureau to rationalize the situation so that Cebu can better capitalize on this emerging market.

“Middle East has long been a target market for DOT, and we are slowly getting into the direction of gaining more accessibility to this market. The arrival of this big group of Kuwaiti students has been out of the blue, but nevertheless, it has been filling in the gap and the downturn in arrivals and hoteliers are happy with this development because it has helped them at this time of low occupancy,” said Alburo.

“The Philippines is inexpensive compared to many other destinations elsewhere, and the price of our education is relatively more affordable, too, so they chose to come over,” said Alburo.

I hope they wouldn't find our quality of education cheap also...

Dugay na ko kahibalo ani kay naa pud ko'y kaila nga nag-canvass ug laing school aron maka-cater ani nga mga mid-eastern studs.(actually kauban niya sa ME nagtudlo sa usa ka school didto.)

Iya rason why they are looking for other schools aside from UV is ... dili lang ko mo-tell kay basin naay ma-hurt, pero kahibaw naman ang taga-UV ani and I hope ila ni ma-solve nga problem. Kay dili lang reputation sa ila eskuwelahan ang madaot ani pati ang atong city ug country. Good luck nalang sa mga taga UV and hope God will guide them with this problem.

^^^^ Yes its true! I picked that news item from the April 8, 2009 issue of Manila Bulletin. Yes indeed there are a lot of foreigners now enrolled at UV. Instructors were even provided with laptops for the distance learning but here is the problem: A dean of the University of Cebu told me yesterday that Kuwaitis are now negotiating with UC because many of their UV graduates failed in examinations conducted in Kuwait. "Blacklisted na daw ang UV sa Kuwait" thats the dean's words.

It's true, iba ns ang impresyon ng mga Kuwaitis sa Cebu dahil dito, ang weakness daw kasi ng mga UV Instructor ay hindi daw maganda ang kanilang communication skills kaya wala daw natututunan ang mga Kuwaiti studs.
