For me, The YOGA SUTRAS is not for the dogs and swines as I remember what Jesus The Christ said.

[quote=flying fish;4247571]SUTRA 2- Yogas citta-vrtti-nirodha
Yoga is the inhibition of the modifications of the mind
-this sutra defines the essential nature of Yoga; its aim and means
Yoga- Samskrta word, from the root word Yuj w/c means 'to join'
Aim- to unite w/ the Divine Reality, the unification of jivatma (human soul) to the Over-Soul
or Paramatma; the process of unification is called Yoga
Means- inhibition of Citta-Vritti
Citta- one of the 3 aspects of Paramatma (Sat-Cit-Ananda); universal medium through w/c
consciousness functions.
Citta correspond to 'mind' of modern psychology but it ha a more comprehensive import
& field of functioning. The mind of modern psychology is confined to the expression of
only thought, volition & feeling.
Citta may be called a product of consciousness & matter, or Pursa & Prakrti
Vrtti- derived from the root Vrt w/c means 'to exist' or a way of existing. Or modifications or
functionings
so Citta Vrtti- means Mind Modification, but not a vibration, not a mental image but
closely associated w/ mental images
Nirodha- from sanskrit word Niruddham w/c means 'restrained', 'controlled', 'inhibited'
so Citta vrtti nirodha- mind, modification, inhibition
SUTRA 3- Tada drastuh svarupe vasthanam
"Then the seer is established in his own essential and fundamental nature"
this sutra describes what happens when all "modifications" at all levels been completely inhibited.
The seer is established in his Svarupa or in other words attains Self-Realization. and we cannot know what this state is, as long as we are involved in the play of Citta-Vrttis (or mind modification).
So only when the mind is "still", can 'Reality' perfectly reflect the 'image', the image of his true nature(my speculation)
SUTRA 4- In other states there is assimilation (of the Seer) w/ the modifications (of the mind)
when the Citta-Vrttis are not in the state of nirodha & the drasta is not established in his Svarupa he is assimilated w/ the particular Vritti w/c happens to occupy the field of his consciousness for the moment.
