OT: I chanced upon a news article (a year or so ago) about a pol sci teacher who was caught cracking pot. I used to be in his class - Pol Sci 51 - and boy, I wasn't surprised with the news. Sige ra to sya red ug eyes, murag bag-o mata sige. I hope he's no longer teaching.

Let's just stick to the facts. In engineering course, NORSU is producing topnotchers in engineering every year. Which is good for them. They are very strict in letting their students pass. In the 2008 mechanical engineering board exam, which my brother is a board passer from Silliman, no students from NORSU took the exam since the school felt they are not yet qualified. And when they took the exam they were able to produce topnotchers even with very few examinees.

Silliman is not bad either in the results. Silliman is consistent in being one of the best performing schools in mechanical engineering in the country. Better than any other Visayan school. The other engineering courses also fared well recently. It is just that NORSU is also consistent in producing topnotchers. They are also one of the best in the country. Let Silliman embrace that fact and take it as a challenge.

2 Summa Cum Laude Grads Highlight 96th Commencement

The 96th Commencement Exercises on March 22 at the Amphitheater may not be any ordinary event that caps the school year. It was in 1984 when Silliman University last awarded the highest academic distinction of summa cum laude. After 25 years, two graduates are breaking the lull.

Stacy Danika S. Alcantara and Marvin M. Flores top the 2009 Graduating Class of close to 800. Each has a cumulative quality point average of 3.90, graduating summa cum laude with their respective degrees of Bachelor of Mass Communication and Bachelor of Science in Physics.

Both Alcantara and Flores are consistent honor students. Alcantara, who served as Student Government president this school year and is the 2009 Most Outstanding Student of the Year awardee, envisions a career in corporate communications. Flores, on the other hand, a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology, intends to pursue a research on what he calls the "anthrophomorphic principle" and the constancy of the speed of light.

There are 91 other students graduating with honors: 18, magna cum laude and 73, cum laude.

    CHED Grants Silliman Autonomous Status

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has granted Autonomous Status to Silliman University for a period of five years, from March 11, 2009 to March 30, 2014. This is the third consecutive time for Silliman to be granted full autonomy.

In a letter, CHED Chairman Atty. Emmanuel Angeles congratulated Silliman, citing its “accomplishments, adherence to quality assurance, and commitment to public responsibility and accountability as a higher education provider” in receiving the distinction.

An Autonomous Status, which is given to a select number of private higher education institutions in the Philippines, recognizes Silliman’s ability to independently develop and offer quality programs that respond to the demands of time.

Silliman considers this distinction a challenge to further enhance its programs and services along its quad-focal functions of instruction, research, extension, and faith formation. This complements its thrust of widening its network of partners in the country and abroad.
