Even the twin-engined C404 cannot match the max. speed of the Bronco...

But the issue here really, has nothing to do with speed.

The Bronco has a far larger operating radius, bigger max takeoff weight (ergo, more ordnance to carry), and finally, superior airframe robustness.

Ergo, you just compared a slingshot (saltik) with a .45 caliber pistol.

Granted, military variants of Cessnas were used in Vietnam, they were called the "Bird Dogs". Anyone watch BAT-21?

In BAT-21 it was the Cessna O-2 Skymaster they used, the military variant of the C-337 Super Skymaster. The O-1 Bird Dogs were the tandem-seat taildraggers that looked a lot like the civilian C-170. Although mostly retired from the Vietnam conflict by the late 60's and early 70's. they were used with a lot of success by Raven forward air controllers in Laos.

The OV-10 is slow and nowhere near as sexy as F-16s or F-18s, but in counter-insurgency operations speed can actually be a liability. I remember during one of the coup attempts in the 80's, I watched as slow-flying prop-driven rebel T-28s (widely known as 'Tora-Toras') went into breathtaking near-vertical dives and strafed the Malacanang compound with outstanding accuracy. Then pro-government F-5s (max speed Mach 1.3) strafed rebel troops holed out in Camp Aguinaldo (in Quezon City). A lot of the shells ended up in Pasig.

In Vietnam, some of the most sought-after close air support aircraft were not so much the F-4s and F-105s but the prop-driven A-1 Skyraiders which could loiter over target for a long time and lay down ordnance accurately, even within "danger close" (with friendly troops at risk of getting hit) range. The A-1 shone in the search and rescue role, where downed pilots were often within yards of enemy troops. A-1s could swoop down low and pick out enemy troops with any combination of guns, rockets or bombs.

For the type of conflict we are fighting in Mindanao, the OV-10 is an excellent platform provided the pilots are not only well trained but also receive good targeting information from the ground. It wouldn't do any good for a hotshot PAF pilot to put shells into ground targets that turn out to be friendly troops or innocent civilians (which has happened).

I know some friends who've flown the Huey and MG-520 in combat. They're regular guys. When in civvies their calm and low-key demeanor belies the stuff they've been through. You don't ever hear or read of their exploits. You'll need to pry their flying stories out of them (a few beers will do), but the things I've heard have left me picking my jaw up from the floor.

As if to prove the point that it's not all about speed, in the Philippine Air Force, the most glamorous pilots are those who fly the jet fighters (F-5s and now the S-211s). However, the most bemedalled and combat-hardened pilots are from the strike (OV-10, MG-520) and Huey communities.
