Most people who support statehood do so with selfish reasons.
Most people who don't support statehood; can't and never will; those emotionally and fundamantelly incapable of compromise. These are the people who live and dwell in the past These are the people who think no matter what good the US does, assume that the US has some devious reason, whether it be for it's personal gain or for world domination. These are the same people who talk of racism in the US, but don't look at Philippine society and see racism everywhere. I personally have felt and encountered more racism in Cebu than I ever have in the United States. These are people who think racism is confined to black and white. These are the people who talk of losing Philippine culture, but yet embrace Western culture so openly. These are the people who think of tomorrow but not next year, the next decade, the next century. These are the people who think of themselves as saviors and heros of the Filipino people, but have yet to do any change. These are the people who curse the Filipinos who have left for oppurtunities outside the Philippines, but forget the millions of dollars we send back. I applaud you for your hope and trust in the Filipino people because I too have hope and trust in the Filipino ... but it disgusts me when you talk of a better life for the simple Filipino family, and be against something that could change the way of life of everyone for the better. There will be compromises, but the advantages far outweight the compromise that will be made. I have been an American citizen ever since I was born, but I love the Philippines and am more than proud to have Filipino blood, but I also consider myself as an American, and I have been witness to the equality and oppurtunities of America as I'm sure many here know. American life is not as racist and horrible for Pinoys or for the minorities as some people make it out to be. Be proud to be Filipino, don't be foolish.
It will be a cold day in hell when the Philippines becomes a US state. The Philippines has always been known to resist outsiders ever since the first Spanish colonizers set foot upon it's shore; but I feel this mentality in today's world is what will keep us behind. The world is not going to change the way it works because it doesn't fit the Philippines. I forget which Philippine hero said this, but it was said that "he'd rather have the Filipinos rule the Philippines like hell, than under the Americans like heaven" (exact wording I know isn't correct, but you get the picture). Where would you have your kids live?
vern I think it's not from a hero... it came from a President. I think it's Quezon.
President then. Sorry.Originally Posted by FK

if that would mean betterment of the lives of the filipinos, then why not. but if americans will just see as inferior to them and they have the edge on everything, the trash with statehood. i still love our qualities and lives as filipinos.
I'm beginning to like the idea of statehood, now that FPJ is going to run for president.... I'm losing hope for our country.
