What I usually do with that situation is try to melee the damn zombie after you hit it with Stasis.. that is of course possible if you still have Stasis left...

In one part, I had to deal with that big black brute thing (whose only vulnerable from the back) then I suddenly run out of ammo. So I had to Stasis it while I brought something from the store. Thank goodness there were Stasis recharge stations everywhere. The game really rewards resourcefulness as well.
