I see religion as a system of belief, whether or not it includes the belief in a god or a belief in some other doctrines or principles. In that sense, at least I can say that Freedom FOR (or OF) religion also includes Freedom FROM religion. It is freedom for/of religion because you are free to believe in anything you like, and free to ACT in accordance with what you believe in. It also includes freedom FROM religion because a person may have no religion or religious belief at all. In other words, freedom refers to both - FREEDOM TO BELIEVE and FREEDOM NOT TO BELIEVE.

OR Im thinking also that your officemate has studied constitutional law and encountered these two concepts. But in law, freedom FROM religion refers more to the state's attitude towards religion in general. Freedom FROM religion - because the state does not want to espouse any particular belief system, which is a usual characteristic of democratic states. It refers more of an attitude of tolerance, where all religions are allowed in a state for as long as these do not conflict with public interest.

i like the quality of your analysis, your one of those who are no longer victims of blind faith,
who justify a concept as true just because its the one being taught to them, keep the mental habit sir, i admire your tenacity to question,

Hey, Catholics can be driven by reason, too.

Atheism is a difficult subject only because of the slander and misrepresentations preached and published against it..

Bakit naman po "for the less educated" lang?

And it is not only religion that shapes a person to be a good one. Educated or not, religious or not, a person can be good.

kung educated ka.... we can live life based on reason without exactly "following" the complete requirements to be communicated with the church... we can "work" on our own things provided nga what we are doing is good and fair to everybody.... I refer the "less educated" to the fact nga most of them kai hadlok magpakasala tungod kai gipanghadlok sila nga naai "hell", when in fact hell is not a thing to be feared of provided nga kahibaw ka sa imung dapat buhaton.... so ang ilang reason ra nga d magpakasala kai tungod naai "hell", which is I'm not that convinced.... doing good "unconditionally" for the sake of the people would be best rather than doing good because of what the church says... so imagine life without the church.... if a primitive man who didn't know anything of "reasonative" thinking and happens to know no God, what would he likely be?? i didn't refer "less educated" as those poor people you imagine but rather those people who don't think logically (i don't know the right term for this.. ^^)...

as of nickz, I'm referring to the ancient times, when human rights and humanitarian people are still not existing... if they're not driven by faith, for sure they would be as barbaric as apes... take note the hardships those preachers experienced dealing with people...

for joseph... I agree with that.. mao bitaw na ako.. ^^

i'd say it's also rather cultural for the most part.

"ikaw bataa ka! cge ayaw gyud simba kay ma impyerno ka!!"

"Dominggo man ron, ngano di manka mu simba? na yawa naka?"

"init raba didto sa impyerno, ayaw gyud pag sinalbahis"
