if you wanna try a custom rom that still retains everything in ur original omnia (apps and stuff) but is at the same time optimized for use, try this. after that, you can try testing out new ones to your liking. everyone has his own unique taste.

yep, the Custom ROM updater was taken from an xp based official RUU. This is an older XP updater, and is less strict to ROM version checking. I'm actually running windows 7 on a vista designed machine. I, too, had problems with updating with the official ROM. I ended up repacking the official ROM with the Custom ROM updater and flashed using XP machine just to test the HK3 stability and performance. Performance wise, the HK3 is just the same as the HJ9

While I'm at it, there doesn't seem to have any new device drivers on HK3 vs HJ9. The only upgrade I could see is from the SS applications, a dual eboot.nb0, and an upgraded Wifi software. I couldn't understand why there are two versions of eboot.nb0 in one ROM though. If you notice the flashing sequence of the omnia, it writes the eboot.nb0 twice -> probably, the first write is the old bootloader then the second write is the new bootloader.

I've tested the Taril ROM, somehow, the compressed applications seem to have caused a read overhead delay which makes the device less responsive than a superlite ROM by PaSoa. I'd still go for a superlite ROM as one can easily add on the original apps as you wish. The old rule still follow... the lesser files in \windows directory makes the WinMo device more responsive.

It is nice to test different ROMs though to see what sort of customization the ROM chef has done. The Taril ROM is a product of hard work.

Here's a couple more of official ROMs. It's not released in the official site, but it is used in some newly manufactured omnia i900. You'd be surprised of version DXIA2. I'll be test driving this one.

sweet.. i'll also try the DXIA2; will it work on vista?

BTW, what software do you use to backup your files and settings? Windows Mobile Device Center only syncs files and stuff, no settings..

to backup your win mo device, just download a spb backup trial. backup the contacts and sms. settings is not advisable to back up if your updating your ROM as the new files will be overwritten and unpredictable results may occur. To restore your files, you don't need to install the trial as the backup file is self extracting.

sadly, DXIA2 is a segmented file. you need to compile it. The available compiler is for xp update only. just inform me if you need assistance with this.

i can't seem to find the instructions on how to flash with the DXIA2.. >.<

    EDIT:

err, i found this.. is this it?
    Allright,

I've found this here before (in the same thread) and it worked for me:
Before you start check that you have all the 4 files needed, they will have names like Bootimage...nb0 , ....phone.bin , CSC....csc , PDA...bin.
With the dots ... representing a version number.
    00. Shut off the phone
    01. Rename the files to eboot.nb0 , phone.bin , customer.csc and pda.bin
    02. Turn off phone
    03. run GrandPrix
    04. Select a profile: "GRANDPRIX LV image"
    05. Load "loader" with eboot.nb0, "pda" with pda.bin, "CSC" with customer.csc, "Phone" with phone.bin
    06. I would chechmark "Format Devices Internal Large Disk" as it appears to work best.
    07. Click Detect button
    08. Connect phone, turn on... Until you are able to use "Start Downloading".
    09. Push "Start Downloading" and the update will start.
    10. In the right part of the screen you can follow the update process. I don't remember what message will be displayed but it must be something like "Job Done", "Job Finished" or whatever.
    11. Disconnect the phone, start it up, do 1 or 2 hard resets and your done.

To be on the save side and a little more complete I've added 6 points.

@rgnoval: looks pretty dangerous to me. I rather use a hacked omnia updater than a third party updater. but, it's your call.

@c_cebrecus: I was trying to compile a vista updater for DXIA2 by extracting the vista updater from dxhk3 / dzhk3. Both updater, btw, are the same. Somehow the program looks at the device preconfig version, device csc.bin, and updater csc.bin. The main difference in the DX and DZ versions is in csc.bin. DZ contains the Plum SIP while DX doesn't. All the rest, the files are just the same. Unfortunately, after trying so many configurations, the vista updater still reports wrong version. I'll see what I can do before I resort to an xp updater...

Finally, I flashed DXIA2 by compiling it with XP updater... The ROM is supposed to be fast, but then the there is something that makes it lag behind. Fortunately, I found the culprit. It's the Samsung Online Widgets. It's a resource hog!
