Just like to ask a question, have you shared your concerns with your suitor?
Regarding your concerns about how your family would think of your relationship, well granted that love is acceptance and all that, I also believe that love could also be a catalyst for change. If your suitor cares for you he wouldn't place you in an uncomfortable situation. If he's a person who knows his worth, then he could strive to be a better person because of his love for you.
I've had many friends and relatives who are inspired to strive better because of love. Some attained success in pursuing and culminating their studies and certain triumphs in life.
