im not Rich, because Rich is my officemate.
Before one can attempt to define the word "rich", one must first attempt to understand what is value. What then is "value"?
There's an expression that goes "One man's junk is another man's treasure." What does this saying mean? It's a saying about the concept of something having value--it's relative.
For instance, people wonder why a rare "Magic: The Gathering" card sitting inside a glass case on a display window at the mall is THAT expensive. They cannot relate to it, and they fail to find the connection of its monetary "value" because they don't play Magic. However, the Magic geek would drool in front of that window for hours, and if he gets the moolah, he will surely buy it.
I have lots of things in my room that people would consider "totally useless". Why would I buy a PHP 700.00 comic book and let it stay sealed/unread? Why buy a very expensive original set of military clothing and NOT wear it? Again, people would automatically say "Rodsky's wasting his money!" But again, check yourself for a minute--have you any right to that remark? What if I picked out one of the things you value very much and then declare that thing to be useless to me?
Again, what is "valuable" to me, may not be valuable to others. What is deemed of value to others, may not be valuable to me. Say someone gave me a brand new pair of Nike shoes worth PHP 7000.00...nice right? It's size 8...I'm a size 5...now, do these pair of shoes have any value for me? None. I know some of the more business-minded here will say "Hey, that's still valuable, because you can sell them!" But think for a minute--it was a gift--should I really sell it? And another thing...the "value" now is not in the actual usefulness of the item, but in the item's ability to act as a trading device.
Thus, with this re-analysis of the concept of value, can you still come up with a good definition of the word "rich"?
