    Seagate Knowledge Base
Important to read everything very carefully.
ISO file ang FW upgrade nga ma burn nimo to a bootable CD. Then boot from CD-ROM lang daun ka.

Remember that you should not upgrade your HD's firmware UNLESS there is an issue with the existing one! Upgrading can cause more problems; remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm happy to report that I was able to successfully update the firmware of my ST3500320AS to SD1A. Hopefully this drive won't fail without warning like all the other unfortunate souls with this hard drive model:

what should be our basis before updating firmware?

okay, don't fix if ain't broken...

so what are the things (symptoms) that should be taken in mind to get a GO GO firmware update?

    I got ST3500320AS, SD15 - i dont see any problem so far.

Bro I have the same Hard Disk as you and used to have SD15 firmware also. If you check the Newegg customer feedback link I gave above, you will see a lot of customers complaining about their ST3500320AS drives failing suddenly (most without any indication of problems before that) after a few months of use. This new firmware is supposed to prevent our hard drives from failing.

It's your choice really. You could 1) Choose not to update your SD15 firmware and run the risk of the drive failing suddenly in the future. Or you could 2) Upgrade to the new firmware (painless if you follow all instructions carefully, and provided dili mag brownout sa inyo or naa kay UPS) and, this is only according to Seagate, minimize or wipe out the chances of your drive suddenly failing. The new Firmware SD1A is meant to fix the failing problems with the older firmwares. I just chose option 2.

alright, I had a link before where we can inquire if our harddisk is affected from the firmware bug or not... I tried mine, seagate website says it isn't affected. further test, i copied serial number from those people complaining about their harddrive has failed, and it says the drive is affected. Unfortunately, I can't find the link anymore.... I saved it, but seems like they changed the page. Moreover, it's in seagate's statement that major drives from Malaysia were affected. I have mine labeled Made in China. If seagate would just recommend right away....
