according to the users -
each time you boot your HDD, part of your HDD fails until such time that it becomes dead (like a brick inside your computer). It cannot be detected from bios. they say, on average - it's 3months.
according to seagate -
naa nay firmware update sa ila websiteWelcome, Seagate hard drive owners. A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may become inaccessible when the host system is powered on:
Barracuda 7200.11
DiamondMax 22
Barracuda ES.2 SATA
Once a drive has become affected the data becomes inaccessible to users but the data is not deleted. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured through December 2008

I say let's wait for the Guinea Pigs to sort it out.
Update: new firmware released!
Seagate Knowledge Base
Any guinea pigs willing to test it out?
EDIT:
Several people have been posting their success in updating the firmware! It looks like this is the real thing.

Thanks Visual C#.
Kita napud nako sa Seagate site. Ni report pud mga users sa Seagate forums na ok ni ang bag-o na FW.
Does the SD1A break 500GB cudas? - Internal (ATA and Serial ATA) drives - Seagate Community Forums
Download ko ni unya, pero gaka kuyawan pa man japun kog update. Hopefully naay mo try diri sa istorya. hehehe.
I just installed the new firmware: so far, it's been a success. My drive was never bricked or disabled in the first place though.
Just a reminder: make sure to disconnect any other SATA devices from the motherboard when doing the FW update. Be ABSOLUTELY sure that you are using the correct FW for the correct drive.
So to everyone who hasn't flashed it yet, do it now.

Thank you for the update. So the new working FW is still SD1A?
Will update tonight ang post feedback. My HD was never bricked also.
Yes, it shows as SD1A, but apparently, its the new and improved (gasp, I sound like an advert) SD1A.
So it looks like I won't be buying a Western Digital for now. Only time will tell.
