anything above the MX510 optical engine is already over rated. no difference at all. ( a user of both MX510 and MX1000 )

I have a 510 myself, and hardware wise.. I' m happy with its smooth response and comfy grip. My only gripe bout Logitech mice is that you can't use the Mouseware software driver that comes with it if you use a KVM (Keyboard,Video,Monitor) Switch. I have to use the Windows native driver na lang. (I used to have an MS Explorer Mouse and the Intellipoint software driver works fine on a KVM switch).

BTW, if your planning of getting the 518, why don't use you get the much newer Logitech G5 Laser Mouse if available. You can adjust the weight of the mouse for optimum balance.
