here's a bit of good news for real:
Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2011 and wants to end his career with the nine-times European champions.
I've renewed my contract for another five years," the 24-year-old told a news conference on Wednesday. "It's a very happy day for me and now I want to carry on winning things with Real Madrid."
Casillas's contract was due to expire at the end of June 2006 and he had been linked with other clubs, including Manchester United and arch-rivals Barcelona.
But the former youth player, who has been one of the club's most consistent performers over the past four seasons, made it clear he wanted to remain with Real.
"I've been saying that I wanted to stay here for the last 12 months," he said. "I've never thought of another club. I want to return the faith they have shown in me by winning trophies. I'm now going to be here until 2011 when I will be 30.
Casillas joined the club's youth set-up as a nine-year-old and made his debut for the national under-21 side at the age of 17, helping them win the 1999 World Youth Cup.
The following season he was called up by then coach John Toshack to the Real Madrid first-team squad following injury to Bodo Illgner.
When Vicente del Bosque took over in 1999 Casillas was given a lengthy run in the side and, aged just 19, he played in Real's 3-0 Champions League win over Valencia in 2000.
He was included in Spain's Euro 2000 squad but did not make his debut until a friendly against Sweden, the first of 55 caps for his country.
Casillas won the league title with Real in 2001 before losing his place to Cesar the following season.
But the youngster was the hero of the club's victory in the 2002 Champions League final, however, coming off the bench after an injury to Cesar and producing three exceptional saves to preserve Real's 2-1 advantage over Bayer Leverkusen.
A few days later a freak accident to Valencia keeper Santiago Canizares, who dropped an aftershave bottle on his foot, made Casillas first choice for Spain at the 2002 World Cup and he has since remained a fixture in the team.
Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera was preparing for a double celebration on Thursday after signing up for three years more years at the Bernabeu and then heading off to witness the birth of his first child.
"I'm delighted as I've been at this club for many years and now I'm going to stay three more," the 30-year-old centre-back told a brief news conference at Real's training ground in Valdebebas.
"But don't ask me too many questions, though, as I'm just about to shoot off to hospital where my wife is about to give birth."
Real Madrid vice-president Emilio Butragueno said the defender's decision to remain at the club was a major boost.
"It's turning out to be a very good day for him," he said. "We are very pleased that he's going to be with us for another three years.
"He is going to become one of the most important senior players in the dressing room and will be an influential figure for Real Madrid in the forthcoming seasons."
Helguera, who can also play in midfield, has been a fixture in the Real Madrid first team since joining them from Espanyol in 1999.
