    For potential biofuel feedstock
    PNOC finances plantation project

As part of its expanding diversification initiative, the Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) is allotting P1.6 million for a plantation project that would grow jatropha, a potential feedstock for biofuels.

It noted that the "Jatropha Plantation Project" will involve the propagation of a plant species known as Jatropha curcas, one of those eyed by government as raw materials in plans to further stretch the utilization of alternative fuels in the country.

"The 37 percent oil content of the jatropha plant can be a substitute for diesel fuel," the state-run energy firm has noted.

PNOC-EDC disclosed that it recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the implementation of the proposed plantation project with Dacongcogon Producers Cooperative Marketing Association (DPCMA) represented by its President and Chairman Rolando Parpa and D1 Oils Asia Pacific, Inc. through its Chairman and CEO Miguel Patolot.

DPCMA, is an agricultural cooperative based in Negros Occidental, that operates a sugar mill. It is also supplying sugar canes to other sugar mills in the province.

It is registered with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and currently has 9,614 active farmer-members.

On one hand, D1 Oils Asia Pacific, Inc. is a subsidiary of D1 Oils Plc of the United Kingdom, a company committed to the reduction of global reliance on non-renewable energy sources through the sustainable production of competitively priced and high quality biofuels.

The company is known for developing advanced refining technology, agronomy techniques and products in biodiesel.

With the project, PNOC-EDC president Paul A. Aquino noted that several benefits could be gained from it.

First, it would be able to help the government in identifying the agronomic requirements of jatropha species in Philippine conditions; while the Department of Energy and Congress work together in finalizing the policies for the biofuel sector.

The second benefit, according to the PNOC-EDC chief executive would be "boosting countryside development by providing livelihood to rural communities through our corporate social responsibility program."

The company has further noted that this initiative is another step to bolster its focus on promoting clean renewable energy.

The use of jatrophabased fuel, it was noted, can provide carbon dioxideneutral fuel in rural areas, reduce atmospheric pollution and help in upgrading wasteland areas.

PNOC EDC is the country’s largest producer of geothermal energy with 1,149.4 megawatts (MW) installed capacity spread over geothermal steamfields in Leyte, Negros Oriental, Bicol and North Cotabato.

Its operations account for roughly 60-percent of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity of 1,905 MW. (MMV)
